I totally stumped by this (Annoying network access denied)

I reinstalled Windows XP Professional SP2 today on my brother's laptop because of a UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error that XP Home decided to give him today.

Now that I got XP Pro installed (and it is an official copy from MSDN Academic Alliance), I cannot get it to access my computer, but it can see it. The other computer can see and access it, it has XP Pro SP2, but it is basically the original version with SP2 slipstreamed in it. Could this have any reason why I can't access my computer from my brother's laptop? (And I just recently took an online class on networking!)

Below is an attached image of the notice I get when trying to access my computer.

I bet you don't have file sharing permissions enabled on your PC.

Nope, enabled on both PC's, as I can move files from my computer to his.

Also strange is that Start --> run --> //server/share works. So, from his computer I can do //kusanagisama/*folder*/ and it will access it.

    What's shared on your computer?

Sort of essential system downloads such as TWEAKUI, Diskkeeper, saved OS and program Updates stuff like that. Also a folder used to backup his files. In all, about 1.6GB worth of stuff.

I had turned the firewall off on both computers and it still did that.

ive foudn those problems when you try to use the advanced windows file shareing. make sure you are using simple file sharing, to go tools->folder options-> view-> and its the very last selection in the list, make sure that is on when you create the initial share, then you can take it off and give advanced rights to it.

I don't that's it either. If I do "\\server\folder" it will open the folder I want to open. However, clicking on the icon in My Network Places will give that notice.

    --EDIT--
I reinstalled Windows on my computer. This fixed the problem. I think the version of Windows XP Pro SP2 (MSDN Academic Volume license) on my brother's laptop could tell that the XP Pro SP2 is not the same version (if you get what I mean)

Also, since the XP Pro SP2 is an acacemic version, it can only be activated once. I would appreciate help in finding a full version OEM XP Pro SP2 w/COA online for under $100 if possible

I also had this problem, but didn't fancy the complete reinstall route. Google found me this method:

    Start >
    Network places >
    View network connections >
    right click local connections >
    Properties >
    General tab >
    Install >
    Protocol >
click on NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol.

Then go through the Network set up wizard again and then I can see my other computers :D

Now, experts out there, please tell me if I've made an awful mistake and left myself open to attack or something. :(

    Cheers
