its from comcast and is a Terayon tj 715

Edit: and the router is a linksys (not sure which model but its not wireless)

I know this post is a few years old, but I wanted to mention that I had success fixing the issue described after a few days of troubleshooting. Hopefully if someone runs into it this may help out.

I have the same service provider, same modem and a Linksys (tried a Netgear too) router.

I powered off all my equipment for a week vacation, came home and re-arranged my office and that is where the problem started. I noticed some Ethernet cables going to-from the cable modem worked and others didn't. Normally a straight-thru cable works fine. Plugging directly into my Mac, I got and a DHCP address with no issues. But my router wouldn't get a DHCP address.

After troubleshooting with Cox (they provided little help), i was just about to return the cable modem when i decided to check the pins in the JR-45 jack on the modem. I noticed two were very slightly bent. Using a small paperclip I carefully realigned them. THAT FIXED IT!

I'm guessing when I went to reconnect my gear, trying to plug the Ethernet jack into the back of the modem in the dark, behind a desk, wasn't the best choice. Or I could have had a poorly crimped cable assembly that bent the pins. Either one probably bent the pins enough to cause a problem.

    Hope this helps someone out.

It has been a really long time since this happened to me. So I am not really 100% sure what ended up being the problem for me, but I think they got us a new modem. Which could go along with what your saying --- something was wrong with the modem. Could have been something like this...
