I'll start this thread with my current bios (0402) settings and I'll update it as I make progress. I won't post all of the complete settings again unless I change multipliers or something drastic like that since it effects so many other settings.

ecc enable b]disable[/b

dual-slot configuration b]single video card[/b

The low-down is this. I've recently discoverd that the soundmax drivers have been causing instability with any mem overclock over 237-238. Now I'm up to 240-241 stable and I'm probably at the limit of this processor stepping as I believe. Larry, Marcus and Jim can probably help justify this since we all have/had nearly the same steppings.

Also, once you've read a review or two of this board you'll understand my enthusiasm for the upcoming rd580 chipset w/ uli southbridge.

Bare in mind that I haven't begun to tighten the mem timings yet and that this board currently only allows vcore based on your processors default + overvolting of about +.1v. Rumor has it that the A8R32-MVP will resolve this with an extra over-volting option or two.

Included are 3dmark06, cpu-z & f@h temps (don't ask the ambient I have no idea atm) pics. I'll post a few benches later and if you have anything in particular you'd like to see let me know and I'll see what I can do!

Questions and comments are encouraged!

Here are the same basic results with the x10 multi ...the major difference being the htt. Feels the same but I want to see what I can do with x9 so I'll bench later.

    memclock value B]183 mhz[/B
    cpu frequency B]266[/B
    processor frequency multiplier B]x10[/B

edit:\ I forgot to mention that I did get to 260x10 at 260 mem frequency but my benches sucked so I've been experimenting elsewhere.
Also ...this board loves to be pampered and to get a good overclock you have to on increase frequency no more than 10-15mhz at a time. Getting past 270 is a biotch.

It's one of those crossover threads - it's appropriate in motherboards or overclcoking.

    ya done fine

Thanks ...well I'm on my way out the door but I have a good news story I wanted to post but I don't have the time.
I'm trying to catch sledge to let him know about it to see if he would do it for me. It's http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=29523

peg link mode = faster began showing signs of instability so I disabled it. I'll try setting it to something mild and see what happens.

Faster Peg is back on ...I lowered the clock to 241 and this seemed to solve all instability. I think the cpu just isn't getting the amount of vcore required to keep this baby stable any higher ...which is cool (pun).

Also ...I was at anandtech and caught a brief glimpse of the A8R32-MVP Deluxe before it was yanked from the sight. I captured a jpg here but didn't get a chance to see any bios shots. Above is the A8R and below is the A8R32.

I've managed to get 3dmark06 stable here ...these are the only changes I've made from the original setup at the top ...I'll try the x10 multi as soon as I know this is stable for certain.

    peg buffer length B]longest[/B
    rd480 ht pll control b]normal[/b

edit:\ I played tce for 1/2 hour ...as before at this frequency I couldn't even load a map. I feel confident that I can take the x10 and x9 multi's farther now.

I'm going to try locking in some stock timings for now and see how things fare. If that works ok I'll see if I can get higher clocks and or tighter timings by reducing the async latency ...just to she what she's made of.

I'll just keep editing the first post til I get things stable again.

Yeah it seems to be working. I still think we're at the top of core frequency at this point because of the limited vcore and I'm not sure how much higher would equate to being safer yet.

I was thinking that if we both set to the same frequency even though we're at different multi's we could compare cpu scores.

I've found pcwizard2006 to be a quick and dirty cpu benchmark which is distributed by the same ppl who produce clockgen. Very small and very handy.

    Also ...we have 3dmark06.

If you can take it up to 266x10 at 183mhz limit we'll be very close (within 1-2mhz).
I would also try and match most of my settings except for ram timings to make sure we're on the same page.

Let me know what you think and we'll go from there.

On the mem bench you need to scroll down on the top dialog to show the frequency ...and on the bottom dialog the information tab is very usefull.

Dude many congrats to you this is awesome!

How does it feel at 275x10?

Feels great - except one thing.

I've been using the system for two days now without a single problem - gaming, photoshopping, running DxO optics pro (very intensive image editing), you name it, all while folding on both cores. No problems.

However, prime95 crashes out almost immediately - not even a minute into the torture test. I've tried it several times, right after a reboot, etc, and even backed down to 272x10 and it still crashes right away.

    Confused :(

Idunno that's wierd. Have you tried sp2004?
  • csimoncsimon Acadiana Icrontian
    edited February 2006
I think I've found out why I can't get past the 2670's ...I get a sp2004 torture test failure on one of the cores everytime I try and go higher. If I remember correctly this is pretty typical of this stepping.

So on with the show ...I'll just have to stay here until my next upgrade.
I'm still going to reformat with only the necessary drivers to see if that might be a cause but I doubt it. Won't hurt to try though.

LOL ..with summer coming up? LOL

I noticed the strangest damn thing today. I managed to get my system to 260x10 @800ht and 183 limit with only 1.35v+ov ...well here's the kicker. It's folding just as fast as when I was at 1.4v+ov and 2662. I thought that 62 mhz made a lot more difference than that but it's not the case after all. I'm beginning to wonder now.

I'm thinking that this may be a good starting point for the summer heat. After I run some benches tonight I'll know more but for now it's looking good.

I'm trying the usb 1.1 now and getting ready to dload the uli 2.3 ...right now I'm at 266x10 |400|166|1.4+ov and it boots so freakishly fast I laugh everytime I get into windows.

stability wise I notice no difference in drivers or settings.
I'm at 236x11@1gb|200|1.375+ov now ...I'm going to bench cpu and mem with pcwizard in a moment.
  • csimoncsimon Acadiana Icrontian

These are my current settings. Everything is benching ok as far as pcwizard goes ...haven't tried 3dmark06 yet since I formatted the D: drive I have to rebuild everything from scratch.

I haven't been able to accomplish this high of an htt with such a high ht link before ...have no idea why. I'm wondering if it's really running like this or not ...no way to tell really unless there is a software that can detect it. I don't always trust what the bios says.

It seems that the harder you push the mem the more it takes away from the cpu ...and vice versa ...the more mem is relaxed the faster the cpu. I think it has to do with the controller being strained. I've also noticed that more vcore definitely improves bench scores both cpu and mem and that's why I feel the controller has something to do with it. I can push cl2.5 all the way to 235 @ 1.35+ov and I'm almost certain it would work at this speed but why tempt fate. I just need more vcore it's that simple.

Also, apparantly heat is an issue as I've read at xtremesystems today. It doesn't take as much as you would think to throw a monkey wrench. The guy writing the post is considering re-applying the IHS with some AS5 and gasket silicone. I'll let him experiment and see what he gets. Already he has gained bandwidth just by going wc.

One last thing ...I applied the Uli usb drivers and the Ms usb 2.0 drivers and everything is fine with the bios set at usb 1.1&2.0 ...also the lated adi soundmax drivers are installed and no issues so far. The real test will be when I try to run True Combat Elite.
