"Magneto-optical" drives. They used to be a great backup solution. 1gb per disk!
They are still used. You can still buy the disks new. They still have an excellent use in audio voice recordings (not music) - stable, good fidelity, large enough volume for audio, easy storage, portable, and MUCH easier than tape.
