Hey Thrax, the extra cache definitely shows itself with folding. Both myself and Omega have seen the same thing, with a 5-10% increase in folding efficiency (guesstimating the percentages, but it should be close). You won't see those gains in everything you run, but it is nice to have.

The Opteron 165/170 are much better choices than the X2 3800+ simply for the 2x1MB Cache. You can really feel and see the difference over the 2x512K Cache X2 3800+. And once again Opterons are a better grade of CPU than the regular A64/X2 series.
You can usually do 2.6 on air with the Big Typhoon cooler and at least 2.5ghz with the stock heatpipe cooler.
