Socket 754 HSF recommendation?

I have a friend building a new gaming rig and he's looking at using an Athlon 64 in an MSI k8T board (socket 754).

Besides stock cooling, the only thing I've heard of (thanks to short-media) is the Zalman CNPS7000A-CU, but I'd like some other options as well. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance! (Maybe I can get him to fold once it's built ;)

edit: I've not looked at socket 754 at all - thanks to having just blown a ton of cash on new machines - so this may be a dumb question, but...I'm guessing socket a hsf's don't work with 754's

Nothing else on the market ATM, AFAIK. The Zalman is a good hsf, tho. I'd just get it.

that Zalman is a monster... make sure to check that Thermalright hasn't release a new one when you finally get around to it

It certainly is a monster, and it cools very well, whether it is running using a slow fan speed or not. It has a massive total surface area and should be considered, whether your after quiet cooling or not. The only draw back with it, is its motherboard compatibility.

For example, out the box, it wasn't compatible with my NF7, simply because its mounting mechanism was so huge. I did get it to fit though, with the help of a file and a metal saw. But the compatiblity issue is its only draw back. I also think this is more of an issue with Socket A boards rather than Socket 754, but nevertheless something to be warey of.

Thanks for all the replies! We'll make sure we build a steel mounting cage from the top of the case to help hold the Zalman ;)
