Help me find THE keyboard.

I'm looking or a simple keyboard, but i haven't been able to find one of them anywhere yet :( It muth ave a standard key layout without any extra "Internet" or whatever hotkeys, like this svcompucycle_1761_118865307. It must have stepped keys and the little things in the back of the keyboard to lift the back up. It must connect via USB. Finally, it must not have any "Quietkey" feature or anything stupid like that, i like the keys to be firm, i really don't care if people a mile away can hear me pounding the keyboard.

Thanks much to anyone that can offer help in this search for the greatest keyboard ever made.

*edit* Found another requirement for the perfect keyboard, it can't have one of those large L shaped enter keys. I would like one with a normal enter key that doesn't take up two columns of keys (just like the enter key in the picture).

I love my Logitech Elite USB. Not the cordless one, the standard cabled one ( i like having a usb hub built into the keyboard)

You like your keyboards just like me!

    BDR - that's PS2

I actually have that keyboard and I like it, but it's a bit too chewy for gobd's taste, I would think... Plus, no USB :(

funny thing, before I owned a keyboard that had the hotkeys and stuff I said "grrr I'm never gonna use all that stupid crap" but I bought the Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop set for like $60, and it has a few things on the top, My Doc/My Pic/My Music buttons, which I admit I dont use much, but the center has the controls for Windows media player (can be set to control Winamp, but I like WMP better) and it has a mail/web/messenger button that are all programmable, but my fav little button is the calculator button right above the Number pad, much handier than having to go through start/progamfiles/access. when you wanna make a quick calculation!

The first one is nice, but the insert, home section of keys is arranged weird, it is arranged in a 3x2 block instead of a 2x3 block which is what i'm looking for, check the picture i posted in the post.

That second one would be very nice if it was USB (which i can't tell if it does either) and it it didn't have the L shaped enter key. I will take a keyboard with an L shaped enter key and hotkeys if i have to but i'd prefer to find one without either. Thanks for all the help people, i never expected to get this many replies so fast.

Yeah Camman i have a keyboard with all those hotkes now and i just never use them, they make the keyboard a little bit bigger which i don't like.

yeah thats one thing I thought was strange about this MS MultiMedia keyboard, the home/end section of the keyboard is all strange and the Delete key takes up two blocks going vertically so there is no insert key in the block, its on one of the dual function "F lock" keys at the top

I didn't read the whole thread, but if you just want a simple keyboard, I think the Mitsumi 104-key 'board that PixelUSA (www.pixelusa.com) has should fit the bill... I'll have to double-check on the return key, but other than that, it should be perfect. It's not a bad 'board either...

That Mitsumi 'board does have an L-shaped return key, tho :(

Gobd: I had to start collecting keyboard that were 10-15 years old in order to get those requirements filled (accept for USB).

I have a PS2 keyboard on my parents computer, which is prolly the nicest keyboard I have seen for sale in a long time. It’s basically a 10 year old keyboard, only it's brand spankin' new. It was sold by a company called Jameco. www.jameco.com

Out of curiosity, why must the keyboard be USB only? You could always get a USB-to-ps2 adapter, as I've never seen a USB keyboard w/o the extra damn buttons, and "quietkeys".

Edit: This may be the board I have, but I'd have to double check.

I've heard that with USB keyboards you can press more than three keys at once and your computer won't beep. That is important to me because i play a lot of games, if you know any other keyboards that do this please share, i've just heard that it is only USB keyboards that can.

TheSmJ, WOW, is that keyboard you posted even missing the windows keys? Does that keyboard have nice firm keys? So far that keyboard is perfect excecpt for the fast that it doesn't have USB, but the USB requirement may change when someone answers the above question.

The amount of keys pressed to return a system beep is entirely dependant upon the keyboard.

Keyboard keys are divvied into quadrants. The better the keyboard, the more quadrants there are due to better electronics and trace mapping. The more quadrants there are, the more keys you can press without a keyboard lock beep.

Ahh, so is there any way to tell how many keys you will be able to press at once or do you just have to buy the keyboard to find out?

Buy and find out. Generally the more expensive it is, the better the electronics though.

Like my logitech keyboard (~$30) can have about seven keys pressed at once (space + shift + w + a/d + g is a common combination for me, and it works dandy).

Sorry. I just checked and this is in fact not the KB I have. I'll check to see where one could get this keyboard though.

I went on a quest to find a non-cluttered keyboard with the classic layout just last year... funny thing was all I could find was those fancy craptastic keyboards you are trying to avoid. I even tried to get Staples, Circuit City, and Best Buy to let me buy one of the fancy KBs and trade it with a simple one from one of their computers they were selling... none of the stores would let me (I don't know why... :hrm: ).

I was looking for the EXACT same things you were looking for... it needed to have the classic layout, not be ergonomical, have ANY kotkeys, must be PS/2 (I found a USB one with a converter), and it needs a simple one-line Enter key. The layout for me is very important because I'm a left-handed gamer, and I need to be able to count on the keys beingg were I'm used to finding them, while avoiding hitting some stupid "Turn the computer off now" button. I also hate all the added hotkeys because every single one of the functions on them can be emulated with a standard KB.

Anyways, I'm rambling... to make an even longer story shorter then it could be. I finally found mine at my local Circuit City. It's sold under the guise of a "spillproof" keyboard. You might want to ask for one of them, or add that to your searches. As an added bonus none of my keys have burnt out from coffee or soda yet either! :D The one I have (I can try to find the brand name later, since Im at work right now) can handle quite a few keys pressed at once also, and has passed the "pissed off gamer KB bash" test quite a few times now! :D Good luck!

Fellow old skooler... I salute you!

So what type of keyboard is it? Who makes it? Tell me the model #if you can find it. From what you say it sounds very nice. Could you do a test for me though, hold the shift, w, a, and r keys all at once for a second and see if it makes your computer beep.

How firm are the keys? If they're pretty firm then i think this is the perfect keyboard for me, i've got a non spillproof keyboard now and have spilled water on it a few times and it hasn't hurt but a true spillproof keyboard would be cool. If you wouldn't mind could you also find a link to it online at circuit city's website?
