TDK seems to be the first company in the world to publicly sell Blu-ray recordable discs.

Unlike CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, at least for the time being, the first recordable BD-Rs and BD-RWs will be sold as singles. According to TDK, prices of blank 25 GB BD-R recordable discs will be $19.99 apiece, with blank 25 GB BD-RWs selling at $24.99.
Sources with companies belonging to the Blu-ray Disc Association have told TG Daily that 25 GB storage will provide plenty of space for recording a single high-definition movie at 1080p (progressive) resolution. Once the complete specification for AACS copy protection is completed, and once the system for maintaining Internet connections with Blu-ray players has been launched - at this rate, probably some time next year - Blu-ray customers will be able to make licensed recordings of movies via on-demand download services.

Does anyone feel queasy about spending a small fortune for a device which doesn't even yet have an industry standard behind it? Maybe I'm too conservative on things like this, but I just am not interrested in any of the HD recordable media gadgets until there is an accepted, long term standard.

With this media at almost $1/gb, hard drives are cheaper.

    $1/GB is pathetic. **** off, Blu-Ray.

I think they will be great as soon as the price comes down! I usually have to back up my HDD to 3 or 4 DVD RWs before I reinstall Windows (far to often). Just one of these would do it for me but not at that price.

I would expect prices to drop significantly once competitors start making media (both HDDVD and Blu-ray)

They'll probably have 25 packs on sale for $25 by Christmas? Problem is- I don't see a huge market for it except maybe for data backups by then either.

Nah. DL DVDs are still close to $50 for a 25 pack.

i bet they will be like DVD +R's like $180 per pack of 20... I think I will use my dual layer DVD's for a few more years... even dual layer DVD's are a bit pricey....

Just wait until HDDVD and BluRay battle it out, prices drop, and one fall out. One will probably win out over the other one, and noone wants to be stuck with the betamax again.
