Can't accesss google

Hosts file has been blanked to eliminate that.
The domain resolves an IP.
I can't ping the resolved IP.
Two other computers in my house can reach google.
There are no abnormal resident programs.
There are no popup blockers.

Work this one out. :sad2:

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 and Linksys WRT54G linked together. The BEFSR41 is handling the internet connection and outsources to two wired clients, the WRT54G is sitting in router mode (As opposed to gateway), handles my wireless card, and forwards all requests for internet to the BEFSR41 via static route. The routers are linked together through the BEFSR41's uplink port, and before last week there were no problems.

The only thing changed was Windows 2000 to Windows XP so I could use TKIP, but as of yet I have not set TKIP up, so that variable is eliminated. Windows XP worked with Google for approximately seven days.

Do you have another hd with XP installed on a setup similar to the one that is having problems?

    Yep. It works.

I assume you can't browse it by IP either then? Any other websites affected that you know of?

    Altavista, apparently.

    Can't browse either by IP.

Hmm... obviously a network problem and nothing to do with the browser. Any software firewalling whatsoever?
    (sounding pretty damn weird man)

    No software firewalling.

Also note that two other computers can access google on the same network setup, so it's local to the computer.

(Damn weird is right. I've never heard of anything like this.)

So this is the wireless computer right? Have you tried making it "wired" (the same as the other 2) just to test?

Unplug the Router then plug it back in again. Mine did this and I have no idea why. It was also the same reason I couldn't access SM. It still worked on other machines going through the LAN, but not my main desktop, strangely enough.

If that doesn't work, use http://www2.google.com as a temporary fix.

Try 216.109.118.68 and 66.216.96.223? The reason I ask is that they are two different address classes and am just trying to narrow down the problem. BTW, Altavista resolves to a class C address (same as Google and Yahoo).

A trace route to some of these addresses *may* help along with a route print.

Yeah, I'd like to see a traceroute and a pathping
  • ThraxThrax ๐ŸŒ Austin, TX Icrontian

Inside the Linksys WRT54G router, there's a function that allows you to ping and traceroute from their console.

I did so, and it's 100% ping timeout to google and the requested IPs (And short-media as a reference; WTF?!?!) as well as destination unreachable to everything beyond the first hop on traceroute (For google, my problem, and S-M + the requested IPs, my references).

    What the ****ing hell?

(This is the time to drop the f-bomb!)

    Thrax,

In case you are still trying, type 'route print' at a console and post the results.

I'll bring up a route print and test your suggestion after school, Armo.

Well, that looks fine. How about a 'tracert' to one of the sites that you can't get too. This is beginning to border on the bizarre.

Just FYI: We have ICMP on the outside turned off for this server (short-media), that's why no ping.

Thrax, what are the IP addresses of the WRT54G and the BEFSR41? I'm looking for the LAN not the WAN address of the BEFSR41.
  • ThraxThrax ๐ŸŒ Austin, TX Icrontian

Having removed the BEFSR41 from the equation today, the WRT54G resides as the lone gateway/DHCP server and is now LAN IP 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0.

DHCP starts at 192.168.1.2 and goes through .1.6

went from windows... flush your DNS information from the command line.. ipconfig /flushdns

if that fails, reset the router to factory specs and reconfigure it, that is unless you have the firewall in to configured for a bunch of crap.

also you can run a tracert to SM and post that as well... TIA

Flushdns was done last week. I came here as a last resort. Router has already received factory reset.

Tracert to s-m also fails after first hop (router). Which means the modem is probably giving me the screw, or the router is failing to forward ICMP out of its eth. int.

Just to comfirm, you've got other clients connected to the gateway with no problems?

Also, can you log into the router with the problematic client (I suspect you can as it is showing up in the tracert)?

Do the router logs show the outbound traffic or is the router dropping everything from the particular client?

I have two other clients (One wireless and one wired) connected with no issues at all. They're as happy as clams.

I can also log into the router, yes.

Router logs are disabled, but they're also linksys logs which simply shows incoming/outgoing IPs as opposed to any real information. I hate that.

I have a BEFSX41 so I'm familiar with the logs. Turn them on for the moment. So that we can see something like

    TCP from 192.168.1.10:4111 to www.teamshort-media.com(198.64.191.210):80

from both a good and the bad client. We're running short of options here.

    LAN: 192.168.1.3 Dest: 198.64.191.210 (Team Short-Media) Port: www (80) --- BAD CLIENT

    LAN: 192.168.1.5 Dest: 198.64.191.210 (Team Short-Media) Port: www (80) --- GOOD CLIENT

That's all there is. The WRT54G, does not, unfortunately use SNMP trapping for logging, so I can't use an SNMP client to intercept logs. It uses another protocol (syslog), but the WRT54G disallows the forwarding of logs to an IP address, so that's worthless.

Ouch, that sucks about not using SNMP traps. The output does show that the router is trying to handle packets from the bad client. I'm fairly well convinced that the problem is not in the router.

    Ghosts in the machine, maybe?

-- BAD is my notation. Heh. Sorry for not specifying that.

Ghosts in the machine indeed, pretty crappy ghost eh?

Still interesting that I cant traceroute or ping anything. Bah.

    Thanks for all the help.

Is this the same router you overclocked, Thrax? (Sorry if that's already been addressed. I've not read the entire thread)
