Hey,

Is there anyway to determine whether or not the file, a file, an mp3 file, has been converted from a lower(or higher?) bitrate and that it is not the bitrate it was ripped @ from the CD.

There are a lot of 320's that my friend has(Ripped from CD, not illegaly downloaded) and some of 'em he converted from 128 -> 320,
Those are the ones I don't want. Is there anyway to distinguist between original rip and converted to?

Perhaps in the MPEG info?

Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

ususally hovering over the file in windows file manager will tell you the current bitrate. There's no way to find out which were upmixed from a lower bitrate outside of listening to the tracks yourself.

Not true... oddly enough I noticed someone asking the exact same question over on the Hydrogen Audio forums the other day, I'll see if I can find the thread, oh, and the term you're looking for is "transcoded".

Got it, I think this is the closest you'll get:

If you upload the music into your Windows Media Player it will show you under the libarary what bit rate they are at.
    bit.jpg

You can easily select and delete the files from your system inside of media player...

He knows what Bitrate they are, he wants to know if there is a way he can find out wether they were transcoded from a lower bitrate.

I think the only way you'd be able to tell is to view the track through an ocilloscope, like in CoolEdit or Audition or a simlilar program. Dropoffs at the low ranges would indicate upsampling. I think I'll give this a try tonight.

If he wants to get rid of the 320's would looking at the 320's allow you to see the ones he doesn't want? or id the guy rip them to 320 and than saved the originals to 320 also?

You're getting this all wrong Sledge. He only has ONE copy of each song. He wants to know if they were ripped AS 320s or whether they were ripped as 128s or something and then transcoded to a higher bitrate later on due to fools logic.

Thanks Enverex. That's exactly what I wanted to ask.
Maybe I didn't explain myself too well..

    @Kwitko

Let us know how that goes.
    Appreciate it!
