Is AVG even free anymore? There is no mention of it on the AVG site anymore and Googling "avg free" brings back a dead subdomain of the main AVG site. Not to mention looking at Google's cache of the dead site it looks like the free version of AVG that was available has no features other than the ability to be installed.

I was on that page. That is the page that says "AVG Free Edition can be downloaded from the AVG Free Website." and that link doesn't work, it goes to a dead site.

It could just be DNS problems. I've seen the free site go down from time to time.

Hmm, on that note then are there any Windows AV programs that aren't Nag/Crippleware?

I don't really consider the free version of AVG to be either. It just doesn't have the bells and whistles of the pay version.

AVG seems to have changed quite a bit since I last used it, it's not as bad now, as I remember it being more locked down and unable to configure anything easily on it or at all.

I use Avast Home Edition, and I love it. You just have to register, and they'll send you a key through email. Other than that, they won't bother you at all if you don't want them to. You just have to re-register for another key after a year. All free though.

Yeah, I used to use Avast! as well. Originally I used AVG and then got rid of it in favor of Avast, then got rid of Avast in favor of AVG now that AVG has changed. But, I'm going to have to call you on that one, Avast! IS Nag/Crippleware. Most of the features are missing and it keeps telling you if you want to use the proper interface you have to upgrade to pro (and I'm sure of this as I installed it like 2 hours ago before almost immediately uninstalling it, heh).

I've never once been nagged by Avast. And it's not crippleware, as it does everything I need it to. It's an AntiVirus with RT protection. That's good enough for me.

The domain is up for me right now. If it's not working for you (and you're using your Windows machine) check your hosts file to make sure that a piece of malware didn't redirect the domain on you.

Yeah, works for me now. And I should slap you for thinking I have "malware".

I know you're competent enough to keep your system clean, but even as a pro, you just never know. I think even God would get spyware in this day and age, if he had a PC.

Bah, God would be uptight and ignorant, thus he'd be using a Mac which is apparently "immune to virii" :rolleyes2

If that is true, it's probably a lucky thing for a lot of us. I imagine the lightning bolts would be coming thick and fast otherwise... :aol:

Prof has to walk his dogs now and it's raining with a high chance of thunderstorms. If I don't return soon, you'll know why. :hair:

EDIT: I made it back in one piece. Nyah, Nyah - missed me!

Ditto, I run the free version on my lappy, NEVER had Avast nag me about anything, unless you call the little orange window that popped up ONCE about Avast winning some award for 2006 nagware.... Thoroughly satified with Avast Pro(paid - gamming machine) and Home on my lappy.
