Game PC Dual Opteron Deathmatch : MSI K8T Master2 vs. Tyan Thunder K8W

edited October 2003 in Science & Tech

One of the biggest differences in the design of these two boards is the raw size of them. In order to accommodate its full length PCI-X slots and large array of memory banks, the Thunder K8W has to use an Extended ATX form factor design, whereas the MSI K8T Master2 motherboard can fit comfortably in a standard ATX case. One quick glance between the boards will show what a massive size difference there is between these two similarly configured platforms.

No, that would just be annoying.

As far as motherboards are concerned, the K8W is a Laetitia Casta.

I like E-ATX boards. More room to space everything out on... if the MSI board had a single, solitary 66MHz (preferably 64 bit as well) PCI slot that was not right next to the AGP slot, it would be near perfect.

Yeah, the K8T needs 1 or 2 64bit PCI-X slots. If you read the article, (pg 4) it showed that a SATA Raid-0 setup almost doubled it's read speed when transfered from a 33mhz PCI slot to a 66mhz slot on the K8W

Yeah, that's why it needs the 64 bit slots. And they can't be pci-x either. I need one 64-bit, 66MHz PCI slot for my HighPoint 1540. I don't think PCI-X is backwards compatible with 64-bit PCI...

I think it autodetects the speed. If you put a 33mhz card into a 66mhz slot, it downshifts to 33mhz speed. I don't why a PCI-X 100/133mhz slot wouldn't do the same to 66mhz speed.
