Overheating CPU

edited October 2003 in Hardware
I currently have a Athlon XP 2600+ CPU and am having overheating problems with. either my cpu fan isnt doing its job or something else is going on but whenever my cpu gets under high stress (usually during gaming) it overheats and forces my comp to restart.

getting to my point, i've been looking at various kinds of "thermal compounds" that supposedly are able to reduce the heat from your cpu by several degrees. do these actually work? if so are there any specific brands that work best?

Arctic Silver III is what most people use. It's 70% silver by weight, which aides substantially in moving heat between 2 surfaces (ie the CPU and your heatsink).

    www.arcticsilver.com

Applied properly and allowed to "burn in", Arctic Silver III can decrease your CPU temps by up to 5*C.

However, the best way to keep your CPU from overheating is to install a high-CFM fan on an all-copper heatsink (anything from ThermalRight), at least if you want to only use air cooling. :)

There's extreme cooling like water cooling or using liquid nitrogen (hell, even Thrax's dry-ice cooling), but sounds like you just want to use air cooling. :)

Thermal compounds aren't going to help in most cases.

If you give me the following info, I can help:

    # of intake fans, position, size and airflow
    # of exhaust fans, position, size and airflow
Make & model of CPU heatsink & fan, preferably w/size and airflow.

If you can find a pic of your case somewhere, (like newegg), it would be very helpful.

If you have an Asus board (Abit boards may have this), you can get a program called Motherboard monitor and see if your fan is spinning up to spec during gaming. If it is, it may be that the connection between the Heatsink and core is less than satisfactory. How long has this been going on?

Which I get to do again, with my main rig's components, rather soon. Four blocks of dry ice, circulating opticool, and a chip capable of 2.3GHz on air. :rarr:

    movies? movies?! yay!

try pulling off the side of the case and see if there's somethign wrong with your fan.

also i'd try the AS3 suggestion of SimGuy, dropped my temps a few degress.

also, what are you running? running that 2600 at stock speeds with the stock cooler?

Ya arctic silver 3 is the best. Overheating ehh, put some thermal compound on heatsink and make sure when you clip it on its getting complete contact with the cpu i had problems in the past with clips getting weak and not holding the heatsink in place properly.
