AMD has officially announced the world wide release of the Turion 64 X2. The Turion 64 X2 will be seen with 4 different chips ranging from $184-$354 per chip "based on 1000 units"
The Turion 64 X2 debuts in four different versions - as TL-50 (1.6 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache)), TL-52 (1.6 GHz, 1 MB), TL-56 (1.8 GHz, 1MB) and TL-60 (2.0 GHz, 1 MB). The thermal design power (TDP) of the new Turions is on par with Intel: The X2's are listed with a TDP of 31 watt (TL-50, TL-52) and 35 watts (TL-56, TL-60) which compares to 31 watts of Core Duo and 32 - 35 watts of the single-core Turion 64. However, AMD claims that the Turion 64 X2 can achieve a lower consumption level, since the chip is able to reach up to 69% more efficient "sleep states."

When AMD announced his Turion Dual Cora CPU, they where selling Turion single core notebooks and AMD said that those laptops could be upgrades to the upcomming Dual Core Turion CPU... Thats why I choose to buy a Turion based laptop (Instead of a Core Duo 1.8 GHZ Intel based laptop)... so I can upgrade the CPU later.
AMD claimed that the BIOS will only need an upgrade in order to support the Dual Core CPU ... but now I'm searching all over the internet to know if AMD has keeped his promise.. will Single Core Turion laptops be upgradeble to the new Dual Core Turion x2 ? If you know the answer, please, eMail me at latinusrex@hotmail.com

Most websites I am reading say that a BIOS update will add the CPUID for the X2 CPUs, however I would be careful in that most OEMs don't like you tinkering with their hardware, and probably will not be apt to release a BIOS update like that even though it's technically feasible. You want the X2? You'll probably have to pay for the X2.... In a new laptop. :( OEMs suck.

No, the Turion64 cannot be upgraded to the Turion64 X2 (dual core) as the chipset is different and even the processor socket has been changed. The turion uses a socket-754 (754 pins), while the Turion X2 will use the S1 Socket (638 pins). Sorry about that.
