How do you properly install/remove a PCI-Express Card?

edited May 2006 in Hardware
On the end of the slot for the card there is a plastic thumb lever that kinda like acts like a clip that comes around to the other side to attach itself to another piece of plastic. Kinda just like that, it clips when a card is in the slot. It seems like there is grip on one side of the lever that might mean it needs to be pressed for either release or insertion of the graphics card into the slot.

How do you open/close this clip and when do you need to do it?

Thanks in advance.

That thumb lever is to lock the card down tight so it makes good contact for the card to operate. Here's a pic of the tab it locks onto.
When the card is in.... you can push the lever down carefully to extract it from the slot. When your going to put a card in, the thumb lever should be open --then you line the card up properly and push down on the card and the thumb lever will lock around the end of the card snugly.
And you always use it or your card isn't seated right.

This clip doesn't appear to push down. It seems it must move sideways somehow.

If you look at this pic, I hope you can see the way these levers are. They look like they must move sideways but they lock. I tried, but they are still causing a problem in removing the card.

Yes, it's a lock from lateral tension. Just reach in and push the tang up towards the top of the motherboard. It's a little bit difficult.

And those clips are highly fragile.

Ok, so you mean just push from the bottom side and forward and that should allow the lever to unlock right?
