Problem With Windows After Renaming A Lot Of Files!

edited July 2006 in Science & Tech
I usually never have this problem, the only time I do is after renaming a ton of "files" I have on my hard drive. After renaming the files (I'm not sure how many, but quite a few) Windows starts acting funny to the point where the pop-up menus from the mouse are blacked out, among other things that go wrong. I hate to rename my files because everytime this happens, I have to restart so the problem could go away. I always have files to rename though I hate to rename them as I try to avoid this on-going problem. Is there any way to fix this problem without me having to stop renaming files, and also without having to restart?

It could be the Windows indexing service causing all that bogdown as you rename a ton of files at once, reindexing all those files. A useless service, in this poster's opinion.

Try shutting off the indexing service by going to Start > Run, type in "services.msc" (without the quotes). That will bring up the services control panel. On that list, search for Indexing Service. Double-click. In the popup, click on Stop. In the "Startup Type" dropdown above the Stop button, select "Disabled," then click Apply and OK.

Next time you rename a bunch of files, see if you're getting the same issue. If not, it was the Indexing Service. If you're still getting issues, we'll try something else.
