Intel's faithful customers have leaked that it will cut prices by 60% on its Pentium line to regain market share from the folks at AMD. The price cuts are rumored to hit at the end of July.

I think Intel is going to not only screw themselves in this but the entire semiconductor market. Let the war begin.Executives at Micro-Star International and Gigabyte Technology, two of Taiwan's biggest makers of circuit boards for computers, said Intel officials told them the price cuts will start July 23.

I guess I just don't see the point in buying a Pentium 4 chip any longer. I guess there are bright sides, we can make cheap high end SMx folding rigs for Team Short Media
It may also convince me to make an upgrade I was otherwise trying to avoid.
I'm pretty much sold on the whole conroe idea but can't wait to see AMD's responce.
You see, a 60% cut not only meants that I can pick a pentium D for $/3, but also, what do you think amd's response is going to be? huh? They cant just stand by, nope, AMD will have to make price cuts to stay competive!!! YES~!!!! HAAHAH HAH H!!! IM SO HAPPY!!!

I don't think Conroe will see any discounts for the first two months it's out, hence probably no downward price pressure on AMD for the AM2 line. We probably will though, see AMD X2 prices fall pretty fast.
I would like to see AMD's prices fall considerably, but if intel slashes prices and AMD remains solid, then I am gonna scoop up a couple intels for next to nothing hopefully.
If the Intels turn out to be really, really cheap, I wouldn't mind swapping out my dual Preshotts for D9xx series. I won't be upgrading to AM2 (or it's successor) or Conroe until their following generations are ready to deploy. I almost always buy on the cheap. For me, one step behind in tech generation for a steep discount is an acceptable compromise.
Exactly. And tech is moving so fast, but so little improvement, does it really hurt to be one gen behind? absolutely no. unless you are some pro gamer or something.
Although, I here amd just fired back with a 50% cut on the athalons.:D If I can pick up a PD for $70, and the athalons are still $150 what do you think im gonna buy?
you said dual p4? where did you get that board. I am wanting to build a couple rigs right now, a new main rig, one for my bro, my current rig will be dedicated linux, and a file/network server. and what os are you running? becuse xp only supports 2 cpu's if im correct? If I could pick up 2 pentium D's really cheap, then I would have 4 cores, and I think that it would be best to run unix or something comparable that can handle 4 cores.
