Need Good Suggestion for DDR2 memory

Ok, I need a little help choosing DDR2 memory for a ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe and AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Orleans 2000MHz HT that I will be buying eventually. Note that I prefer memory with heat sinks on them.

Which one of these would be good?
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 675 (PC2 5400)
OCZ Gold Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)
OCZ Gold Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)
GeIL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 533 (PC2 4300)

For some reason, this is the most popular brand on NewEgg (The Corsair I listed is the second most popular):
pqi TURBO 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)

Unless you are looking for RAM overclocking and that last 5% potential, go with the G.Skill or Geil. Both those brands produce good quality DRAM that will perform exactly to specifications, if not better. No, it's not the overclcockers' parts, but it's good quality. I did not look up the links Dan, but I assume the the Corsair and OCZ has lower latencies...and higher prices.

Not to advertise or anything but a customer pointed me to a nice deal.

I'm not sure that the dual rebates will work very well though, but if it does, it's a hell of a deal for DDR2.

Actually, only that second OCZ (the DDR2 533) kit has lower latency of 3-3-3-8. The others all have 4-4-4-12

I could swear that lemonlime found the memory controllers on the new AM2's to be kinda sucky.

I think he was saying something to the effect that the memory controller can only divide the CPU frequency by a whole number, and that mainly only the 2GHz CPU gets the correct memory frequency (which is what I'm buying)

Mack, that really is a good deal. For the money, assuming those rebates are good, nothing can touch that.

    Hello Mack...

I sent you an email earlier today, but would this DDR2 667 fit into HP DV5000t? I just want be sure before ordering.

Edit: ;) I just realized that I linked to desktop memory. Anyways, Mack sent me an email that DDR 677 1GB OCZ memory should work with DV5000t, hasn't ben tested, though.

I was going to ask this same question, but I'm glad I read this post first. I have one question though. Would I see any noticeable differences in performance with PC6400 over PC4200 or is the PC6400 only useful for overclocking?

    rc1974,

Is your current ram DDR2? What board and cpu do you use?

Right now, I don't have a DDR2 board. I am looking to upgrade and am looking at the ASUS M2N-SLI (Nforce 570) board.

If you still have DDR, it isn't compareable since it's a whole new memorycontroller. But PC6400 is faster than PC4200, yes. PC6400 is about as standard in DDR2 as PC3200 is in DDR.

Would I actually notice any performance differences other than in benchmark tests?

The main reason I am asking is the price difference between the PC4200 DDR2 and the PC6400 DDR2 is quite alot.

You are effectively crippling the memory bandwidth by lowering the memoryclock to PC4200 on the cpu. And AM2 lives on memory bandwidth.

Now I'll have to find another way to get the price down on my upgrade plans.

I liked it better years ago when AMD stuff was way cheaper than Intel and they weren't changing motherboard sockets every whipstich like Intel. I also wish it was like back in the PCI/AGP transition days when most, if not all cards had versions for both. Now, it's either PCI-E or nothing. If there were AGP versions for most video cards, I could cut my upgrade down by 2/3 of the price.

I'll spend the money on this upgrade and next time... more money because the industry has changed everything again. Really, this whole thing is nothing but a big money making scheme by the industry.
