Im not sure if this is even the right forum to post this in (mods, feel free to shift it if not)

Im from New Zealand and am travelling to th US later this year (September). Ive noticed ALOT of the stuff Im wantin for my rig is ALOT cheaper off newegg but alot of that depends on the mail in rebates.

My question is; Does anybody know, If I order the stuff I want and have it delivered to a friend of mine in the states for me to pick up, will the rebates still apply if I mail them in?

My experience with rebates is that they are like insurance: the payout looks good in theory, but collecting can be troublesome. I think to be safe, your best bet would be for your friend to send in the rebates and have the money delivered to his US address. That may be a requirement to begin with, but even if it's not, it only gives the company handling the rebate another excuse to drag their feet or "lose" your paperwork.

Rebate payments are usually handled by a 3rd-party firm which has no other connection to the company that sold the product, so guess who sometimes ends up getting squeezed in the middle?

I'm not saying that you will get screwed out of a rebate, but should something go wrong and you get to the point that your only recourse is to file a claim in a US court, you will find that doing so is a whole lot easier for your friend in the states than it is for you in NZ. :)

My experience with mail in rebates has nearly been 100% successful. Prof's advice above was good. Have a US friend order the part for you, to be received at his home or business address. He should then file for rebate using his US address (non-PO Box). He can then forward you the money when he receives the rebate.

Mine have always been successful, that is until I had a bad run in with kingston. They "lost" my paperwork, and they even sent me a postcard telling me they did. okay, send me my $40 check. Nope. Aint gonna happen. Its a game of roulette, you probably will get them, but there is a chance you wont, and it depends on the company you are dealing with.

i agree with prof. moosey over there...ur friend should take care of the paperwork cuz otherwise it could get really hairywhich would also mean that he would have to pay for it
