computer hacking

edited July 2006 in Science & Tech
I own a Dell Latitude D800. There is someone going into my laptop. I use Microsoft XP. He can see everything I do on there and everytime I create an email account he finds out the passwords. I know this is true because I have friends that have friends who know the kid. They come back and tell me he got my password again. I use webmail and hotmail (BTW I don't tell anyone my passwords when I change them). But now he can see everything I type on my laptop etc... I was told he had my MAC address, so I changed my NIC card but he is still doing it, any help?. Sorry if I am not giving enough info.

It sounds like you have a trojan virus and/or keylogger.

You can start by running Anti-Virus programs. If you don't own one, AVG Free is your best bet. Once you download that take the laptop OFF the Internet. Physically unplug the cable!

Once the scan is done try to save a list or log of what it found then try to remove/clean anything infected. Come back and you can post the list here.

It has nothing to do with your MAC address BTW. MAC addresses are for local networks like if he were in the same apartment or wireless network as you.

I have already tried every anti virus program you can think of. I have tried Hijack This (which works btw but what ever it is I remove he just puts it back on my laptop) . Also I am in the same wireless network as him. We go to the same school.

I have to do that tomorrow when I get to school because I can't use the wireless network at my house. Btw I've reformatted my harddrive also which didn't work. Thanks

Heh, contact the FBI, that would shoot him up the ass, especially if you know who it is specifically.

Is there anything you have that's not on a commercial CD that you reinstall after reinstalling Windows or something? As if it continutes he must still somehow have something on there. Also, is your wireless network at home secure or is it open?

If you know who the kid is, why aren't you over at his house kickin his face in right now?
  • edited July 2006
The reinstall CD has nothing on there, I know that for a fact. The wireless network is not secure because I don't use my laptop at home anyways, I just use my desktop. I have a DSL connection. Contact the FBI? Can they do something?

Because Kicking his face in isn't going to solve anything. I rather see him go to jail and kicked out of school, since that is what he is trying to do to me first.

Hacking is a federal felony. And the FBI really likes dealing with it.

Wish I could think that way, but I have 300lbs. of a bad temper ;D

I hope we can help you, but if we can't(or even if we can), contact the FBI as mentioned. And post back what happened, I love hearing about these jerks getting their due.:thumbup

but how am I supposed to prove that he is actually doing it. Because all I can say to them is " people tell me that he found the password and they read it back to me"

Is this the school's network? If so you could turn him in for violation of ToS (I assume you have to agree to some policy). Guarantee hacking is a big no-no for them. Even under suspicion he'd probably get "inconvenienced."

I highly doubt this guy is good enough to bust through anything you've got to protect yourself without detection. He uses something--a Trojan or a key logger most likely. And I also doubt you've got the know-how to set up a trap for him to incriminate himself so you're just going to have to ring the bell on him and see what happens.

dudes, turn him in to the FBI? that could totally ruin his life forever.. What i would do is take his computer and apply some kerosene on it, then take a match...blicky BAM! he won't be hacking no more. That and it seems he is some what of an expert hacker..either that or he just found a bug in your schools wireless network. Have you ever tried to put up a personal firewall like mcafee or whatever (i think i heard pc-cillin and zone alarm are good now a days)

People who hack should have their lives ruined. Immoral, valueless maggots with an abject care for people's information and privacy.

the plan is to ruin his life because that is what he is trying to do to me for the past 1 1/2 years

Install a firewall and only allow what you trust (eg.. web browser and email) out. Block everything in. That stops intrusion.

Then make your secret questions for your webmail accounts.. something so obscure.. he couldn't guess it.

    Thats a good start :)

Or, get a packet sniffer of some kinds, and log all network traffic, log everything you can, and then go to the fbi, they will most likely seize his computer, than he is screwed; kicking his face in is a good idea too, why not do both. kick his face right before the fbi gets there so that they dont have to put up with him.

Change the administrator accounts password.(Assuming there preloaded by a school.)

Not if they're friends or someone doing it as a joke. If one of my friends or even a friends friend was doing it, I might feel the urge to kick his ass, but not ruin his life. So if your friends know who it is, why don't they tell you. Are you sure they're "friends"?

they are friends. But they know people that know the kid. The kid won't tell anyone what he is using. I have changed the administrator password like 50 times for my school account. He is breaking through the firewall at school or something. I'm going to post the HJT log tomorrow. Thanks for you help. I already have reported him to the FBI. No this is no joke. He is giving out all my information to people such as my SS# etc...
I've reformated my harddrive, changed the motherboard and the NIC card but nothing seems to work.
I'm going to try the packet sniffer and try to get some evidence.

Switch to linux (I recomend a strong secure distro such as debian), disable ssh and get a good firewall.
  • edited July 2006
yes, I was advised to switch to linux but I Need windows XP for the software for my school. But I guess if worst comes to worst I will switch but I am going to try anything possible to get this over with without having to do that.

Good luck with this man, I'd be a bit distressed too, but I would have also called the FBI along time ago. Especially when you hear your SS# being passed around that is nothing to scoff at, and MORE than enough reason to "ruin" the bastards life.

Why would you put you SS# on your computer?

I would get a firewall router and close all ports except the ones that you need, and like I said earlier, I would get a packet sniffer and log all ip/tcp/udp traffic that is going on. That would also allow you to see which port he is using to access your machine. You could also encrypt your filesystem, as ntfs allows you to do that. Although, if he is that good, that will just be a small hurdle.
  • edited July 2006
I'm not putting my ss# on my computer. He keeps on getting the passwords for my school account and my school account has all my info on it, which he printed out.
