windows 98 connection problems

edited July 2006 in Science & Tech
Help! I've been attempting to set up an old HP computer with Windows 98 as the O/S for a family friend. This friend is trying to set up a dial up account with AT&T, but when the computer's modem tries to dial, the modem keeps getting disconnected. I found out that the computer was part of a network. It seems that the modem is trying to dial into a network that's no longer there. Short of telling this person to throw this one out and get a new computer, how do I set up this computer so that it's not trying to dial into a network?

Thanks for any advice.

Ask your friend to go to his/her ISP and get there instruction sheet for installing a dial-up modem setting up dial-up properties. Or, find out which ISP the friend subscribes too, go that ISP's website, and download the instructions. I'd be happy to provide you more definitive guidance, but it's been YEARS since I've set up any kind of dial-up device (thank the Good Lord!). It's also been ages since I've touched Windows 98.

Out of curiosity, is your friend elderly?

EDIT: I apologize for reading your post too quickly and missing the obvious. Please go to AT&T's site and search for their dial-up installation guide. Ensure that you remove whatever dial-up accounts are presently on the subject computer first.
