Windows XP Pro Versus XP Pro 64 Bit

A few questions please:

- Will XP Pro 64 install and operate on a non-64 bit CPU system the same as the regular (32 bit) XP Pro?

- Any pitfalls I should be aware of. The only reason I'm contemplating XP Pro 64 is attractive prices on eBay.

- Are Service Packs 1 and 2 available for XP Pro 64?

- Does Windows Update work the same for 64 as for XP Pro regular?

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't know for fact, but I think XP64 is built on SP2, and would not work with non 64bit CPU's.

    Pros
    _____________________
-Xp X64 is based off Server 2003 x64 but they crippled IIS

-Most virus's can't function properly or run in X64

    - Its a bit more secure and stable

-Many kernel upgrades mainly the high ram support (4GB +) and efi support and resource management was improved

    -Many new anti rootkit technologys

    -Far less security updates

    -Much better driver support

    Cons

-16 Bit apps that wouldnt run in xp without needing to be set to compatability mode wont run at all.

-You need a 64bit anti virus nod32 has a version that works so does sav 10.

Oh no, nothing wrong at all! I should have selected a different smilie. Sorry for misleading you. You merely brought back to my memory that XP 64 did not come out until AMD and Intel developed 64Bit-capable processors, and if you and I remember correctly XP64 is not backwards compatible with older processors.

I've been running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition for just over a year now and it works great. The drivers have improved a lot and everything is working perfectly. The only external hardware I have is a couple iPods, an MSI BToes Bluetooth USB dongle, and a Logitech Freedom 2.4GHz Cordless Joystick and all have native 64-bit drivers and work fine. In the beginning there were a few apps that didn't run on x64 at all (TrueCrypt and Daemon-Tools) but both have 64-bit versions now. The only applications that won't run on x64 are the ones that use 32-bit Windows drivers. I'd go for it if I were you.

    - Will XP Pro 64 install and operate on a non-64 bit CPU system the same as the regular (32 bit) XP Pro?

No, it will only run on AMD64/EMT64 CPU's.

You CANNOT use 32-bit drivers, they MUST be 64-bit. This includes hardware drivers and software ones (Daemon-Tools, TrueCrypt, etc.)
    - Are Service Packs 1 and 2 available for XP Pro 64?

The 32-bit version of XP and the 64-bit version of XP (x64) use different service packs. There is no "SP2" for x64 yet, however the security features are built into the OS from the start. x64 is based on Windows Server 2003.
    - Does Windows Update work the same for 64 as for XP Pro regular?

Yup, you can do it through the website or through the windows update program that sits in your tray.
