Question About Wireless Routers...?

edited August 2006 in Science & Tech
I have 3 Routers, 1 Microsoft Wireless Base Station (Wireless G-Router) ; 1 Linksys Wireless-B Broandband Router ; and one Linksys Wireless-G Router. I don't know which to use, or which is better to use. The Linksys Routers both look the same except that Router-G doesn't have the antennas in the back like Router-B. I want to keep one so I can get rid of the other 2. Usually, if I can't figure this stuff out, I get rid of them all, so any help is appreciated!:aol:

Well, I have the Linksys wireless G but it does have antennas at the back. Never a hiccup with it. It serves three PCs, two wired, one wireless. The latest firmware gives it QOS. If it were to break I'd replace it with another one, see no reason to change.

Yeah, Wireless-G is the one without antennas... Wireless-B is WITH the antennas, but I'm wondering which to use... because I also have a Microsoft Base Station (Wireless-G Router).

Here's a pic of mine, with antennas. Is yours a differant model?

Well I have 2 Linksys Routers... One is exactly the same like yours with Antennas, and the other is without... I'm guessing because they are different models Wireless-B (With Antennas) & Wireless-G (Without) and I have both.

I don't know about the other two but this is my second Linksys G and they both have/had antennas so I don't know what to say apart from it is an excellent router. I also believe G is up to five times faster than B.

The WRT54G (Wireless-G) should have antennae. Take them off of the B, use them for the G, and then use the Linksys G.

The Wireless-G I have has no atennas nor does it look like it ever did, nor does it have anywhere to put antennas. I'll see if I can post up a picture of them.

Here it is... Top Is Wireless-B, Bottom Is Wireless-G and the 3rd bottom is the Microsoft Wireless Bass Station (Wireless-G also)

So from these, which would be my best option?

Please flip the "Wireless G" model over and copy down the model name for this thread, please. No one really knows what you actually have, therefore we can't make valid suggestions.

Sorry, I'll try to be more specific. Linksys Wireless-B Broadband has model # BEFW11S4 (with antennas)

Wireless-G is also Linksys, has model #BEFSR41 ver.3 (without antennas)

They're both almost the same except for the fact that Wireless-G says EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch
    Wireless-B just says broadband router.

Without antennae it cannot be a wireless router. I am not aware of any small office/home office wireless routers without antennae. An Internet search for "#BEFSR41 ver.3" returned this description - "Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL" router with four-port switch. Did someone sell you that unit and tell you it was a wireless G model? If so, they were without a clue or lied to you.

OK, now onto your question. Of the equipment you have, your best choice for a wireless network would be the Microsoft 'base station'. If you wish to run ethernet cables, any of your routers would work, probably much the same.

Well I got these for free and beggars can't be choosers so I took them. The reason why I say that the Wireless-G model is a router is because it says so on the unit. Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router With 4-Port Switch (with no antenna). Could this be so or no?

The Linksys BEFSR41 is not a wireless router in any capacity. It is a wired router and is more than 4 years old.

    You have:

    (1) 802.11B Wireless Router
    (1) 802.11x Wired Router
    (1) ****ty Microsoft something or other.

For wireless, I sadly have to suggest the Microsoft.

I guess I'll go with the Microsoft Base Station then, thanks.

I would stick with the Linksys Wireless B router... just becuase I've seen lots of trouble with that MS router.

    What type of problems?

General loss of connectivity, having to constantly powercycle the router like almost on a daily basis... just general annoyances.
