AMD Eyes The Platform Business

It's all about the OEM business. That's where the profits are.

The channel or desktop business is nice but OEMs are driving the business and they like and want the platform concept. A complete solution, where you have the chipset, graphic, CPU, drivers, software, bios for both video and a certified motherboard that you can warranty for at least two years.

This was one of the AMD's biggest weaknesses. Now with the acquisition of ATI, AMD can finally stand up against Intel and will enable it to compete in the most profitable market segment. The large manufacturers will like the fact that AMD CPUs powered up with ATI's graphics and chipsets can make a stand against Intel's Platform.
Intel should fear such a platform. We know it will take some time to make things work but once it's done it will create a lot of interest in the OEM world.

AMD's new Fab in New York State does not sound ridiculous anymore. There might be some extra demand in both CPUs and GPUs from the new AMD.

No you wouldn't, Q. People like you and me disdain computers in a branded box...unless it's a laptop.

You are correct... I would not buy one but I would for work PC's. We have over 200 PC's under 1.0GHz and we cannot afford to drop $1,000 per PC to upgrade. If Dell came out with a Total AMD PC, it should be under $500. At that price I could see buying 50 next year.
