Athlon 64's a bit thin on the ground

edited October 2003 in Science & Tech
It has been reported that the number of Athlon 64/FX CPUs around, just ain't enough, which seems to explain why there aren't too many supporting motherboards available yet for them either.

AMD apparently has no plans to ship too many of these new CPU's till next year, simply because it hasn't yet the ability to manufacture the chips in decent quantities.

[blockquote]Even though you can buy Athlon 64 3200+ both in UK and Austria there are no too many boards in the shops to plug them in. Some of the Tottenham Court Road computer shops have them but in many shops you have to preorder the board if you want 64 marchitecture on your desktop.

We understand, as we have reported before, that the real expansion of Athlon 64 and FX boards will come in Q1 2004 at the time when AMD will be able to ship more CPUs.

I read in MaximumPC that they really won't be going full tilt until they perfect the 90nm process for A64/FX. Chances are they'll have to turn to an outside fab for that, perhaps IBM. If they build their own 90nm fab it probably won't be up for a good 2-3 years.

Haven't they already been working with IBM on 90nm fab for sometime now (1-2 years). I think the roadmap for amd is to have it out q3/q4 2004.
