Soon I will be getting my P4 3.2c.

Now I need to order the mobo and ram.

Mobo: Asus P4P800 *OR* Abit IS7 (leaning towards the Asus)

Ram: Clueless.

So far I have been recommended the following (256MB chips):

Buffalo Tech. (winbond) pc3700
Mushkin lvl. II pc3500
Corsair XMS pc3500

I plan to overclock this thing as far as I can with my slk900, what memory would be the best? (fastest latency + highest clock)

The winbond is alot cheaper (about 50 bucks) then corsair (70 bucks) then mushkin (85 bucks).

Just wanted a little more input before I make my final purchase.

Oh, btw I'll be getting a 9800 pro soon also, and overclocking it .... maybe I can make a run at your guys 3Dmark scores ^^

Well, if budget is limited, then the Buffalo is OK. However, if you're looking for MAX overclock, a few companies have PC4200 (DDR533) out now and that's where you should be looking on the Intel dual channel boards. More expensive tho, substantially.

From my reading on various forums, the best 875 chipset overclocker *seems* to be the P4C800 -E Deluxe, tho there is no huge consensus. make sure it's the -E version, not just P4C800 Deluxe

Get the fastest RAM you can afford that decent quality.
  • edited October 2003
For the fastest ram available, get some Corsair XMS4000 or the new OCZ EL DDR PC-4200 Dual Channel DDR. Anantech just did a test on this new OCZ stuff and it even beat out the Corsair and Mushkin DDR in bandwidth and overclocking ability. It will probably carry a premium price tag though.

From the posts I've read, the Abit IC7, which is a canterwood chipset board, would be a prime choice for overclocking your P4. Also, you might consider buying a lower clocked P4 like a 2.6 and have more money to spend on quality ram like above. With a 2.6 and the OCZ ram, you still stand a very good chance of running the fsb/mem at 1:1, even overclocking it to the 3.8 range or so. Doing it this way will also give you much more memory bandwidth too.

well, I got the 3.2c for a low low price, otherwise I would have gotten the 2.4c, it was such a good deal, I couldn't pass it up ^^

    I think I will go with the corsair xms pc4000 (2x256) and the IC7 Max-3 :X

    Perfect!!!

And this is coming from an AMD user.

Actually, the Max-3 has been rated "Board of the year" by a whole bunch of sites and magazines.

    Croc,

I was actually referring to myself (an AMD user) giving something for Intel a thumbs up.

Actually I have toyed with the idea of what you are getting for a second machine.

Definately stay away from the Asus P4C800 Deluxe, the original one. It had massive RAID performance problems, the northbridge heatsink interfere's with installation of AGP cards, it uses 3Com's Gigabit ethernet LAN, which can and will saturate the entire PCI bus and it doesn't have the newest I/O Controller Hub (ICH5R).

The Asus P4C800-E Deluxe fixes all of these problems and utilizes the new ICH5R. Performance on this board is phenominal. More Intel users over @ OverClocker Forums recommend this board for high-speed overclocking than the Abit IC7-MAX3, myself included as it's what powers my system.

Croc, that P4 3.2C is good for a minimum of 3.6-3.7 GHz, utilizing a multiplier of 16 x 225 if you get a good stepping chip (SL6WF or SL6Z3). After that, air cooling starts to become inadequate for the heat output of that chip. Good PC3500 or PC3700 should do you well, as it usually will operate @ 1:1 with the FSB @ 225 MHz (450 DDR).

yeah I was reluctant myself .... I have used a few intel system which were supposedly faster than my shuttle, but for some reason I get a weird feel from intel systems .... I don't know if it was lack of software optimization or the intel itself, but I didn't like it. If I build this beast and it doesn't turn out the way I expect, I will just sell it on ebay and hope to make a little profit.

no worries. I really appreciate the replies, just givin u a hard time for making my desicion harder :P

Read a few articles / threads at various sites ... looks like the boards run head to head, and a few sites show the asus ahead a llittle. Will the pc3500 have decent timings at ddr450? (corsair xms?)

    Ok, all done reading.

Looks like I am going with corsair 3700 (2x256) and .... Asus P4P800 Deeeeeluxe. Seems as tho everyone thinks this board is great for o/c and the fact that it is 50$ cheaper helps alot.

The 865 platform (Asus P4P800) is a great choice :)
Although the 875 platform (Asus P4C800-E) does offer faster memory access with Performance Acceleration Technology, the 865 is still plenty fast.

As well, I'll vouch for the 2x256 MB Corsair XMS3700. It's what powers my systems and at a speed of DDR480, I'm getting approximately 5400 Mbps memory bandwidth (that's on a P4C800-E).

    Enjoy!

Hey, Croc, you build your new system with either the IC7 Max 3 or the P4C800-E, you will not want to sell it. The Canterwoods just love to overclock. If I can get my OC with my budget RAM, 3600 or 3700 shouldn't be a problem for the selection you're making.

OK .... bastards, I'm spending WAY mroe than I should (or have) ... but here it is:

    Asus P4C800-E Deeeeeelux
    2x256MB Corsair XMS pc3700
    Sunon 92mm 48cfm
    Samsung cd-r/dvd-rom combo

so, the complete system will look like this:

    P4 3.2c HT
    Asus P4C800-E Deluxxxxx
    512MB ram (2x256MB corsair pc3700)
    Radeon 9800 pro
    M-Audio Rev.
    120gb WD/160gb Maxtor (both 7200rpm/8mb cache)
    52x CD-Rom
    Samsung CD-R/DVD-Rom combo

    Shuttle will look like this:
    Barton 2500+
    1GB (2x512 kingston hyperx DDR333)
    40gb WD 7200 rpm
    Samsung CD-R/DVD-Rom combo
    onboard sound
    onboard geforce 4 mx

I will start a thread next week when I get my system built and o/c with my 3dmark scores. whats the record here for 3dmark2001se???

Highest I've cranked out on a system almost identical to that (except a P4 2.4 @ 2.95 GHz) is 18,244.

Same mobo, same RAM, same video card, same hard disk. :)

    Good luck!

    //Edit: Geeky1 holds the record with 18,383. :)
