New Computer

edited September 2006 in Science & Tech
Hello there,

Im not sure if im posting in the right place but I have just recently purchased a new computer and a norton antivirus to go with it. I have been searching the internet and also this site for other ways to protect my new computer but there is so many different programs i dont really know which ones I need and which ones I dont. Can anyone here assist me with ways to protect my computer? what should I install? I have had some bad experiences with spyware and viruses with my old computer (which is why I bought a new one) therefore I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Gentle

I highly recommend a copy of Webroot's Spy Sweeper program; it's pretty much the best preventative application in an industry where spyware prevention is pretty much awful. It's about $30.

I also suggest, if you're feeling adventuresome, that you replace Norton Antivirus with a copy of AVG Antivirus from Grisoft. It uses less resources than Norton, and catches more viruses. It also has the same features as Norton.

I know nothing about "Spy Sweeper", but if Thrax recommends it, I'm sure it's top notch. I do know about AVG - it is excellent, and it's free! I also disdain Norton security programs. They are bloated and will slow down your computer's operation.

I've seen some reviews that consistently rate it very highly. I have a client that uses it all across their enterprise. Takes a lot of resources, but their machines stay clean.
