Just bought 256mb of PC133 ECC/REG/BUFFERED SDRAM for my Sun server.

$200 FRICKING DOLLARS

//end rant

One thing I noticed though - the Ultrasparc IIi processor that it has, which has been around for two years, is basically an Opteron: 64bit with an integrated memory controller for mad memory bandwidth. It's a very fast little pumpkin, even at 550mhz.

wanna post pix of teh inside of the server? :D

Is that the one that Sun has that honking big heatpipe cooler thing on? If so, I'd be interested in seeing it, as I'm thinking I may put one on my R9700...

I would, but the server is 20 miles away right now. When I go to the datacenter to upgrade the mem, I'll snap some pictures... There's not much to see. It's a 1U SunFire V100, and the inside is pretty standard. No crazy heatsinks or anything.

is that a cheap price for such a stick? could you also take a pic of the ram to post.

bad bandwidth? I think you mean bad bandwidth. We're talking PC133, not DDR266. That's too much money for SDR. Gotta love propietary computer components.

Prime, did you ever think about going to crucial's site and checking for memory for it? I just did and you really screwed yourself; crucial's 256 part is only $74 and the 512 part is $119.

I just checked through their memory configurator wizard to find it.:D

I tried crucial memory in it:

    PC133 / BUFFERED / ECC / REGISTERED.

    It wouldn't boot.. Period.

I also tried Kingston, and no name. All PC133/E/R/B

None worked. It wouldn't boot. Period.

It took me 6 months to bite it and buy the memory from Sun. I tried every possible avenue to avoid it.

Also: You void your warranty if you used non-sun memory.

This is like complaining about the property tax on your Rolls-Royce.

We poor people feel your pain... :bawling:

Wow man, I use REGISTERED/ECC 256MB PC2100 DIMMs in my dual MP box, and those were $50 a stick. Is it the same for all Sun workstations? I was thinking about popping for an old SparcStation since I have some 72-pin parity RAM it could use, but if it requires Sun-certified parts, I'm going to think again.
