Fresh install ...can I use F.A.S.T.?

edited September 2006 in Science & Tech
Hello,
I posted my boot failure in the "Emergnecy" forum
(http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50001)

I can't seem to access the repair windows option and now it looks like I must do a clean install. My question is- can running F.A.S.T. over my old drive recover settings that I can use. The point is the drive still works and all the data and programs are intack but it does not boot up. Can F.A.S.T. recover settings from this drive if I install it in another computer as a slave?

Thanks for you help
Kim

My apologies..F.A.S.T. is a file and settings and transfer wizard. It is designed to transfer setting from an old computer to your new one. My question was will it work on a drive that no longer boots up and collect the settings?

    Thanks,

    Kim

Sure, the FAST application is pretty good, I just hadn't seen that acronym before.

I use F.A.S.T. all the time. I am not aware of a way to do what you suggest. F.A.S.T. pulls all the settings from the current user...meaning the one you are logged in as. I am not aware of a way to pull the settings from another user on the same drive, much less from a user on an old hard drive you've plugged in to the mobo as you suggest. If you go through the F.A.S.T. steps, there is a place you can browse to additional folders for data, but no way to browse somewhere else for user settings.

Be careful using F.A.S.T. It works well...when the file isn't corrupt. I had it happen once. In fact on one of the Microsoft MVP sites they tell you to test the F.A.S.T. file before you wipe out the hard drive. Just try to re-import the file you just made using F.A.S.T. If the little green bar moves at all, it can read the file. If the file is corrupt, you'll get an error pretty fast.
