Please Advise: Freezing Issue - Sims 2

----Miska--------Miska---- subject to change
edited October 2006 in Hardware
Hello,

I've been having a terrible time playing the Sims 2 since I moved the game over to my new laptop (HP dv8000t).

I will be playing along "just fine" for an hour or two (the amount of time playing varies - there is no certain "set" time that passes before the problem occurs), when suddenly (and without warning) the game freezes. However, if there is music playing in the game (say, from the stereo), I hear no anomalies with the sound of any kind (no skipping/ repeating, etc). Also, the mouse pointer does not lock up and I am able to move my mouse around normally.

I have tried updating my video card drivers as well as my sound drivers and this hasn't worked in any way. I have scoured the Internet, the official BBS and the Support area without success in finding a solution. Even without any downloaded content the issue occurs. The only way "out" of the game when this happens is to turn off the system/ hard boot and I hate having to do this as often as I have to because I am playing the game.

Also, I have all the expansion packs installed as well the patch for the base game as well as the available patches for the expansions. I have even restored windows back to the first time I turned on the machine as well as reinstalled my OS (Windows Media Center 2005) as a last resort in hopes of fixing the issue. I also have all the Windows updates and most current drivers for all my hardware installed.

I do end all unnecessary background tasks before I begin playing the game - this practice became a "habit" during the original The Sims series. The only tasks I leave running under my User Name are taskmgr.exe and explorer.exe. I completely disable my firewall and anti-virus programs, even ending any background tasks left behind by either program. :)

I am very particular with my systems and defrag nightly before shut down, clean my drives regularly of "junk" files, and scan the registry and fix errors. In a nutshell, I am more particular about my systems than I am my car or my house! Lol

I checked my Event Logs after each issue and found no errors listed in any log, not even a warning is listed. This truly is a strange anomaly!

I understand about the drivers and manufacturers not "being with it" in terms of keeping up with the latest drivers, especially where laptops are concerned - I wonder that is. In any case, I was able to locate a set of the latest Nvidia drivers modified for laptop use from http://tweaksrus.com ; specifically:

http://www.tweaksrus.com/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=163&Itemid=41/ - I downloaded and installed the GeForce 91.47 drivers for mobile systems.

Unfortunately, this didn't "remedy" the issue; which has me really confused since I've heard of many people with similar (and lesser) mobile setups running the game and its eps just fine. This has really got me "scratching my head"; it just doesn't make sense! Lol I have never experienced such an anomaly with The Sims series, either the original series or the second series.

I even ran specific tests on my video card and everything checked out to be "just fine" in that department. The results were : Benchmark: 812 and the "Stability Test" ran for 11 minutes with no artifacts, it survived the test with ease. The core temp of the card did not exceed 72° - the threshold is 110° - during the entire test.

There are also no conflicting system resources; however, I did notice that the video card is sharing IRQ 16 and the I/O port, but again, no conflicts:

Generally speaking, the game runs beautifully on this machine, just as well if not better than on my desktop setup that has the Nvidia GeForce 6800 card. This anomaly just doesn't make sense and has had me "scratching my head" for several weeks now, and I fear that soon, I shall begin to tear large clumps of hair from my head! : o Lol (Okay, I actually won't, but really feel like doing so!)

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated. I hope to resolve this issue before Pets is released.

Many Thanks in Advance.

Have you gamed much with your laptop before? Were the games as intense as the one that's causing problems?

This might not be a drivers problem. It may be that your laptop is overheating.

    Hi Leonardo,

Thanks for responding, I appreciate it.

No, I've not tried any other games on this laptop, I figured the Sims 2 series was large enough and didn't want to fill up my drive with other games.

I did consider the problem stemming from an 'overheating' issue, so I bought a Targus "Chill Pad", which did seem to help somewhat, but did Not solve the issue completely. The pad did allow me to play longer than before, but the "freeze" issue still remains. :(

I have tried various video drivers from Laptopvideo2Go and Tweakrsus. Currently, I have Xtreme-G MobileForce Drivers installed (91.45) from Tweaksrus.com. The latest drivers from HP are "stale" and only at version 84.54 - which makes me wonder why laptop manufacturers don't keep up with driver releases.

I’m honestly “out of ideas” as to what the problem could be stemming from. I’ve also lowered the game settings from within the game, yet still ‘eventually’ get ‘the freeze’.

Aside from “the freezing issue”, the game runs great, almost better than on my desktop with a GeForce 6800 card.

If you have any further ideas, I’d appreciate hearing them. :)

    Regards,

As an experiment, try putting a box fan blowing across your laptop while you are playing the game, along with having it on your chill pad. See if the extra airflow the box fan brings helps out some more. If so, then you definitely have a cooling problem and might need to figure out how to clean out the heatsinks on your laptop.

    Hi Muddocktor,

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. :)

I will give your suggestion a try and report back on the results.

I will mention that since adding the "chill pad", the GPU temp hasn't risen above 61 degrees during game play (I've been tabbing out of the game regularly to check the gpu temp).

How "cool" does a GPU have to run in order to perform properly? (Just wondering)

Yup, really looks like an overheating problem. It's not just a problem with your laptop, but rather a problem perhaps the majority of laptops. Cramped interior spaces and poor ventilation are just compromises that are made in order to put a lot of hardware into a small enclosure.

Are the intake vents in the bottom of the motherboard? If so, try elevating the laptop a little from its resting surface. Sometimes just increasing the vents' elevation will bring some relief. If you feel technically competent and have a service manual for your laptop, you should also consider opening it up, removing the CPU and GPU heatsinks and replacing the factory silicone thermal paste or thermal pad (lowest of the low) with something high quality, such as Zalman thermal paste or Arctic Silver 5. That can make a major difference, allowing much more heat to be transferred from the chips to air blowing through the heatsinks.

Or you could get rreally radical!

    Hello, :)

For several hours I played Sims 2 with a box fan running. The fan seemed to further help the issue – although it made “me” very chilly! Lol ;) The "highest" GPU temp during my "testing" was 57°C/ 135°F, with the Ambient temp not rising above 41°C/ 106°F. Interestingly, immediately after tabbing out of the game, the temps would drop several degrees - I never realized internal temps dropped so quickly.

Unfortunately, the system did finally “freeze” coupled with an odd “clicking” sound that seemed to be coming from “just to the right” of my “disabled” touchpad. This could either be one of the hard disks (there are two) or a fan of some sort (not sure how things are laid out “under the hood” since I haven’t yet ventured into “digging into the guts” of this laptop. I’ve only had it since 17 July – a little over two months).

Also, I forgot to mention in my previous posts, that the night before last while I was testing the game and during two of the several “freeze ups”, I saw something very strange. Twice, after I had “tabbed out” of the game to check the GPU temp, upon going back into the game my entire screen was one time filled with black vertical lines with a red background, and the second time a black background with white lines and pin-dots. These lines were small and at an angle. After some moments, the screen returned to “normal”. I’m not sure if anyone who has replied in this thread has ever played the Sims 2, but when you tab out of/ minimize the game and go back in, it normally does take several moments to “get back into” the game. But the strange “patterns” I saw were not “normal” at all; I’ve never seen anything like it before on my desktop.

So, at this point, I’m really not sure what to do to fix this issue. I’ve contemplated calling HP about it (I have a one year warranty), but I’m not sure I want the laptop picked up/ taken away then mailed back. I’m not sure doing that would be worth the trouble since they’d only (perhaps) replace the card and I’m not quite sure I want another 7600 Go after all the problems I’ve had with it. Coupled with the fact that HP doesn’t often update drivers – especially video drivers and it’s a pain trying to find proper drivers for this card.

Also, I’m not positive as to whether or not I’d get my laptop back in time for when my class start. I’m starting soon at NYIT online (going into the BS – Computer Science/ IT program) and don’t want to be without this system (I want to be able to work “anywhere”). Then again, I am under warranty, so I’m not sure what I’ll do. I wonder if HP would be willing to stick another fan in - I doubt they would be willing to modify the system to that degree, I wonder if I should ask.

If I went ahead and had the video card issue looked into, I could then also have them look into/ replace my keyboard (yes, I have one of the “lucky dv8000ts” that drops certain letters from time to time (man, I wish I had known about this issue before ordering) and there is something also going “mad” with my CD/ DVD read/write drive. A week or so back it started making a horrible noise when I’d stick a disc in – the noise sounds like a “jackhammer” – louder with some discs, than others. The only way I can run a disc (and simultaneously keep my sanity) is to put a bit of pressure (not much) on the outside of the drive. I’ve pretty much given up on the idea of watching a DVD on this system because of this issue. :(

Any “pearls of wisdom” would be greatly appreciated. :)

    Many Thanks in Advance.
