Windows XP speed help

NOTE: See posts #10 & #11 for information regarding this problem.

Thanks,

Prof

Yea, i have a windows XP that's been acting really slow for a couple of months. I've finally gotten tired of it. It takes forever to open a program, get onto the internet, open a menu(like the start menu), to use a drop-down menu, and to look at sub-menus from a menu(like going from the start menu to the All programs menu).

My computer is running Windows XP Home edition(v.2002) Service pack 2
It has a pentium 4 cpu 2.40 GHz
and 2.39 GHz, 128 MB of RAM
My internet is a brand new motorola SURFboard(cable)
and it runs through a Linksys router(WRT-54G).

Does anyone know if my problem will be fixed by upgrading the RAM
to 1 Gigabyte?

It sounds like your computer has become infested with spyware/malware or a virus.

Please read this thread and then post your own thread in the Spyware, Virus, and Trojan forum.

You may have Spyware, but 128MB of RAM looks to be the cause of your problems. You should definitely look into getting more RAM...you'll notice the improved difference instantly. :)

To be perfectly honest, it doesn't sound like spyware/virus' at all. With 128MB RAM XP will be paging the moment the machine finishes booting, if not before. There is also the trend that anyone not completely computer savvy seems to install many programs (that they don't really need) and have lots of them load on boot (as shown by hundreds of icons next to the clock, something I see far too often) which is a very viable explaination about why peoples machines "slow down" the longer they have them (simply because they are installing more and more things and lots of them seem to have something that wants to load on boot).

So yes, your problem will be more than likely fixed by upgrading to 1GB of RAM. 128 is no-where near enough to run XP without it thrashing the HD. Also look into removing programs from the startup that you don't really need. It will help lessen the blow and will reduce bootup time.

Trogan, Enverex, your thoughts are similar to mine. The reason I leaned towards malware was because Jump~ stated, "acting really slow for a couple of months." I interpreted that to mean the system had recently slowed down. Frankly, with only 128MB RAM, I'm wondering if it's ever been more than slow.

i don't think that it iss the loading of programs when i boot my computer because i don't often boot my computer(once or twice every two-three months).

Are you saying your computer is noticeably slower than it used to be? Or is just a general slowness you've experienced all along?
  • edited September 2006
    noticably slower

Can you download HijackThis and post the log here please (it will flag up any malware/spyware running as well as anything else resident that could be slowing the machine down). (Step 7 - http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43902)

    This one:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [prutoct] C:\WINDOWS\system32\prutoct.exe
    ...is a problem.

    More info here.

I'm going to scoot this thread over to our SVT Team for further analysis and disinfection recommendations. You'll be in good hands there. :)

    Can you do this please:
    • Run Hijackthis.
    • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
    • Next, click on Open uninstall manager.
    • Press the Save list button.
    • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
