Steady rythmic blinking LED normal?

Just a quick question,
In all of the days I've had my cable modem I've never noticed the data LED steady blinking.
Is it normal... I know that its supposed to blink when data is going through the modem but this is kinda weird as its a continously steady rythmic blinking not the un-patternistic blinking of random data streaming like you would think.

I turned off the modem and my router for a few hours but it still does it.

Also I should mention that I came in to my rig this morning and I had no internet, the lite was steady blinking then... So I powered down both the router and the cable modem and powered them back up, that fixed my connection as you can see becasue I'm posting from the machine now... But the weird thing is the steady blinking lite...

Its ok if its supposed to do it, its just that I don't remember that it was doing it before now...

Thanks,

Yeah, it's normal. I was just reading about this over at DSLReports. Check the second post:

Might be a good idea to firewall yourself though. Just to be safe.

Very normal indeed. It blinks about once per second on mine.

Well, the gateway your cable modem connects to can be a server or a router. The blinks you see are the server or router simply making sure you are still connected. In theory, if you have a LOT of problems with dropped connects adn others in your area also do, the admin for your local gateway is notified.

However, for individual connects like one house, the owner tends to call in first and is told to unplug and then plug his modem back in after 30-60 seconds to let the modem dump settings-- after power on, the modem will resync. In my case, I get to call in also usually, as the local DHCP server keeps thinking my Zoom modem is a Toshiba-- NOT! And net result is Comcast tech gets to tell the gateway and DHCP servers what it is talking to again.

So, if the light that blinks stops blinking easiest thing to try first is to unplug modem for 30-60 seconds and then plug in again while computer is off (shut down in Windows before doing modem reset, wait until it is up laike normal almost and then restart\aka power on computer and you should be online. The blinking tells you you HAVE a connect the modem recognizes, adn every once in a while, like at my house every 7-14 days, I get a new DHCP set and sometimes the computer does not take it and I get to do the process above once every couple months to 4 months.

 When my buddy's cable modem starts doing that, it usually means his intrnet isnt working. Then I hit it and the blinking stops and the internet starts up again.
