How do I know what type of ram I need

Hello,
I am wanting to upgrade my memory to speedup my old machine. But I don't know what type of ram I have/need. And I don't know how to determine this. Is it stamped on my existing memory?

    Yes, the memory quantity (yyyMB) and type (PCxxxx) should be on a label on the RAM module. If not, download and run Belarc Advisor, which will list essentially all the hardware components of your system in detail.
