Please help me - I am running Win XP Media Edition. I am attaching my HJT logfile. I also am getting popups from WinAntiVirusPro and symanetec is busy with some download thing that keeps trying to invade my PC.

Please tell me I am not beyond help?!??!

hi mich, Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

I ran VundoFix and it found nothing! I also click on the remove Vundo button but it won't remove it. Here is the new HJT log

I am attaching the logfiles. Also please tell me how to get rid of VundoFix. Should I keep Ewido & run it regularly?

As I was attching the files - I got that dreaded popup again saying I have a virus from winantiviruspro... will it ever go away? Would doing a system restore work? I tried it earlier & it wouldn't let me but I could try it again.

Popups are actually getting worse. Still getting opoups from WinAntiVirus Pro too. Is there help for me at all? Getting concerned that there isn't.

yes mich, you may delete the vundofix from your computer, it looks like ewido took care (deleted) what was left of vundo on your PC, also for future reference please post all requested logs in the post itself and not as an attachment unless asked to do so otherwise, no problem though, please do the following steps next (in order):Make sure that you can see hidden files.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Click My Computer.
    3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    4. Select the View Tab.
    5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    7. Click Yes to confirm.
    8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
    9. Click OK.
then Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
    • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
    • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
    • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

no problem mich, please do the following:Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Also background is gone (not a biggie just an observation). What is GEARSecurity - GEAR Software - C:\WINDOWS\System32\GEARSec.exe?
And one more thing - IE keeps feezing up.

WIll my PC ever be right again!?!?!?!?!?

yea the background will come back after your next reboot:) please do the following next:Download roguescanfix_setup.

    Doubleclick roguescanfix_setup to install it.

After the installation, you will be prompted if you would like to run roguescanfix now. Click "YES" to start the tool.

When you start roguescanfix.bat you'll see a menu:
    1. Run Roguescanfix
    2. Run sharedtasksrem

Choose option 1 by typing "1".

Note: This tool needs internet connection because it downloads an additional file to let the tool work properly.
If your firewall gives an alert, allow it instead of blocking it.
In case you still get the message BFU.exe is not present, download BFU.zip from here.
Unzip it and place BFU.exe in the c:\program files\roguescanfix-folder. Then doubleclick Roguescanfix.bat again.

The tool will uninstall some programs and delete related files and registrykeys.
When some files won't get deleted, it will ask you to reboot your system to delete the files after reboot.
Please make sure the uninstall of the programs are finished before you click Yes to reboot.

A textfile wil open. Place the contents of that file in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis logfile.
(The textfile can also be found at c:\program files\roguescanfix\task.txt)

Should I assume we're getting closer or not?
Also the desktop background did not come back.

we are, but unfortunately malware removal sometimes takes time my friend don't worry we'll get you there :)..also about your backgroud in that case you can simply just choose a background again by right clicking on the desktop choose properties then desktop tab and go from there..but as for this program you asked about-->C:\WINDOWS\System32\GEARSec.exe its a valid program..take a look here for more info:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/gearsec.exe-1819.html
but lets continue the cleanup...1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

that got a few things...how is the pc running now? were you able to re do your desktop ok? and please post new HJT log
  • edited September 2006
desktop is the least of my worries but yes I got it back. Still can't get to Safe Mode - screen appears for 5 seconds-then goes blank. Still getting popups but maybe a few less. Now things in systray seem to disappearing - start off there but then the desktop reboots (hope you can understand that - not PC just desktop refreshes) and things that were there (systray) are gone not just hidden. Wierd.

Silly question but could any of those programs I've been downloading cause Safe Mode not to load? I still have all of them in a folder on my desktop. Should I keep them or what?

Just tried to open Norton AV using the icon in the systray -nothing happened. If I click on the icon on the desktop it open fine.

    Here is the latest HJT

no i don't think so keep the programs i've had you download for now as they create backups in case we need those which i HIGHLY doubt, lets continue when you say you can't get into safe mode do you mean after you choose safe mode it won't boot up and freezes after you select it via f8? also please do the following in order-->Download ATF Cleaner
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Next, your version of Sun Java is outdated and should be updated.
    • Download the offline installer from HERE.
      • Accept the License Agreement
      • Select "Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language".
      • Save the file to your Desktop.
    • Next, uninstall your currently installed version from Add or Remove Programs.
    • If you have older versions listed uninstall them also. If you simply update to the new version,
it leaves the older version(s) still installed, complete with previous vulnerabilities.
      - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
      • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
      • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
      • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
    • Restart your system.
    • Install the new version by double-clicking on the file you downloaded.

Before I do what you asked let me answer a few questions -
As for the sfe mode problem..... I hit F8 & safe mode comes up. I select it and WIN XP. After I select myself to enter - my desktop appears BUT only for a few seconds the the screen goes blank. All I see is safe mode in all corners and writing across the top. The desktop is gone. I waited a few minutes but nothing happened so I rebooted to normal mode.

Also I use IE. Which right now is still acting messed up. When I open a broswer window is when my desktop appers to refresh itself. I sure hope some of this is making sense. And I am still getting popups stating I have viruses from Win Anti Virus Pro - I just click on the "X" rather than cancel.

Should I still proceed with your instructions above? Just making sure - don't want to make matters worse.

I am still getting messages from WINANTIVIRUS adn have noticed that Spy Sweeper is very busy blocking IP addresses from my PC. I tried to get a list but they don't give one.

    Next?

Just got another notice from Spy Sweeper - says it blocked access to www.drivecleaner.com - where did that come from?. I have more - spy sweeper blocked 59.148.220.131 and count.exiteexchange.com.

Also I cannot open Norton Ghost application failed to initalize message - UIMain.exe. When I started this virus I turned off Norton Ghost so it wouldn't backup bad data... good idea or not? ANway can we use that to reinstate my PC to an earlier day when I didn't have all these problems?

you could as it'd be like a system restore, however, if that earlier state you choose to restore it too contains malware you'd just be re infected so lets continue with the cleanup if ok with you..first, did you do as I asked in my prev. post about ATF and updating java? also, please do the following go to http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/ then click remove-cws.gif when cwshredder opens click update, then click fix but make sure NO browsers, windows etc are open before pressing fix then reboot and post new HJT log along with if CWShredder found/removed anything

ok good that TM spyware log didn't tell me much so please do the following first go to http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan/ and click tmas-scan.gif run the program and at the end have it remove what it finds and also try to note some of the things it detects/removes and let me know what they were..then reboot and post new hjt log along with an uninstall list log by doing the following--open HJT>misc tools>uninstall manager>save list and it'll open a txt file with the programs from add/remove please post that log in your next reply also

I can open the uninstall manager but whe I select save list - the whole program closes.

Also popups are worse! I have to reopen explorer constantly as it closes on it's own. What is next?

lets try this-->1. Please Download and install Superantispyware
    http://www.superantispyware.com/down...NTISPYWAREFREE
Load Superantispyware and click the check for updates button.
Once the update is finished, close SuperAntispyware again, we'll perform the scan later in safe mode

    * Start Superantispyware.
Click the scan your computer button.
Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.

    2. Also download this file - combofix.exe
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/combofix.exe
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

I cannot even get to the website. All I get is server cannot be found.
Also you mentioned safe mode - I can't get to safe mode - you must have forgotten. I can't shut down PC without actually turning it OFF.

Looks like things are going from bad to worse!

which site? superantispyware or combofix? also safe mode isn't biggie right now don't worry about that for now..also please try this-->Please perform an online virus scan with F-Secure Online Scanner.

Please navigate (using Internet Explorer, other browsers won't work) to the following site: http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols3.shtml
    • Click the F-Secure Online Scanner Next Generation Beta link.
    • When prompted, choose to install the software.
    • After the software has installed, click Accept.
    • Click Custom Scan and check the option for Scan inside archives, then click Start.
    • The necessary databases will then be downloaded, and the scan will then start automatically. Please be patient as this scan will take a while to complete.
    • If any infections are found then once the scan has finished the "cleaning" screen will be displayed. Choose Automatic cleaning (recommended).
    • After cleaning has finished, then the Finish screen will be displayed. Choose Show Report.
    • In order to post the report, press CTRL+A on your keyboard to highlight all the text. Then copy and paste that information into this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

AWWWWW! Things are realyl gettign worse. I did the scan - then the PC froze so I never was able to print or copy a report. It found 6 viruses and 24 cookies. All removed.
When I rebooted (had to) I got error c:windows\system32\ixfivgg.dll is missing or something.

Is there hope? Seriously? Why isn't doing a system restore going to help? I am getting so frustrated. I appreciate your help but this is nerve racking. This thing even messed up my Norton Ghost - they only recovery point I now have is Oct 1 AFTER the infection. I can however go back to the Dell configuration setting which is APril of this year. What should I do?
Here is the new HJT log.
