In Need Of Sound

edited October 2006 in Science & Tech
I just reformatted my computer and now it doesn't have sound...
I don't know how to get it back and what to download for my sound to work.
Does anyone know a site or something that I could download the requirements to get my sound back?

You need to install the sound drivers, either for the sound card or the integrated sound on your motherboard. You can find the sound drivers at the manufacturer's website of your sound card or motherboard. If you need further help please give more detail about your hardware, i.e. motherboard or sound card.

Okay that explains some stuff...What if I don't know what my sound card manufactuers are..? How do you find that out...? So I can't just download any random sound card driver off the net and have sound...?

First, we'll need to know if you plug in your speakers into an add-in card or into the connectors on the motherboard. If the latter, we'll need to know your motherboard manufacturer and model. Download and install Belarc Advisor and post the results of the hardware section back here.

Ok the speakers are plug into the connectors on the motherboard (I think). I downloaded the program that you gave me, here the link to the site for the Belarc Advisor: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Belarc/Advisor/System/tmp/(Admin).html

But I don't think it states my sound card manufactuer...or it says I don't even have one..

Download the aida32 program, it will reveal the sound card you are using,

You probably need to install your chipset drivers as well.

Note, post only your sound card manufacture.

You need to be able to unzip the file using either pkunzip or winzip,

That's a link to your hard drive, no-one other than someone on your machine can access that file.

Run unknown devices and post back what it says. But if you have a newer system this will be useless.

Alright I've installed the programs AIDA32 and Unknown Devices (and winzip to open them)

Now for Unkwon devices it says for Multimedia Audio Controller it says
Unknown Chip Device from Compaq Computer Crop (now owned by Hewlett Packard) and Chip: VIA Technologies Inc. VT82C686/A/B AC'97 Audio Codec

And for AID32 I have no idea which to post under the Multimedia Section, it has
Windows Audio, PCI / PnP Audio, ACM, and VCM. (There is nothing under Windows Audio)

You can find the VIA chipset drivers here,
    http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2

Select proper OS and chipset drivers for your motherboard.
ie Chipset or Platform driver, Integrated Graphics, and Audio.

    Example for Win-XP system,
    http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070

aida32 will display the motherboard chipset ID and CPU.

Edit, It's time for me to hit the bed, it's 03.10 in the morning.

Ok, simple things. Are the speakers plugged in to the right port? Is the audio mixer muted?
