NB cooling

Since I switched my fan on my h/s yesterday and got a drop in temps I was thinking of getting a new cooler for my northbridge. I noticed that FrozenCPU had the new Zalman cooler for $7.50 so I was going to try to order that today and see how far I can push my 1700+. What h/s is everyong running on there systems? Right now I just got the stock cooler from abit.

Well...you could always slap an Athlon stock heat sink on there, if it fits...

I do have an old pentium heatsink I could put on there, don't know if it will do as well as the stock abit though, that is why I was leaning to the Zalman.

    This on an NF7?

A 60x60mm 1u rackmount heatsink will fit, depending on how big you CPU hsf is. However, I'd suggest getting a Coolermaster DP5-5G11A (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduct.asp?description=35-103-122&depa=1) and using that. It WILL need to be lapped, since it has two lips on the base that were intended to hold it in place on the old Pentiums and stuff, and they have to be removed. A few minutes with some 120 grit will take them right off, as they're just aluminum. Anyhow, that heatsink with the stock fan is small enough that it should fit regardless of what you have on the CPU. I'd recommend upgrading to a 50x20mm high-speed fan (Top Motor DF1205BH, http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/27/93.htm?430).

The heatsink itself is small enough that it fits between the mounting holes for the stock cooler. So, I suggest that you go to the hardware store and pick up a piece of steel (something that won't bend, like 1/16" thick would be fine) and make your own clip. You'll also neeed two bolts, two nuts, two large metal washers, and two large rubber/nylon washers that are as large as, or larger than the metal ones. You can then bolt the HSF to the northbridge.

I have that Zallman and am convinced the overflow from my CPU fan is what really helps it out since part of the fan directly over the NB blows directly down on it. I am going to move my Zallman to the SB when I go water. But if I was going water I would still move it and put heavier and active on the NB.
