For those planning on camping out on retailers doorsteps in the hopes of owning one of the first PS3's, would be wise to know that GameStop and EB Games are today taking pre-orders for the new console.

A $100 reservation deposit is required. Currently the pre-order is in-store only. According to GameStop, online pre-orders will be announced after software and accessory availability dates are confirmed.
Canadian gamers will have to sit this round out, as the pre-orders applies only to US stores. EB Games, however, has made indication that Canadian pre-orders will soon follow.
GameStop and EB Games will begin accepting limited pre-orders for the PlayStation 3 console on Tuesday, October 10, on a first come, first served basis. Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to deplete this allocation very quickly, most likely in minutes. We will not accept additional pre-orders at this time. To avoid an unnecessary trip we strongly recommend you call your local store to determine availability. A $100 reservation deposit is required, which can be funded with cash, credit or trade. As we cannot control production and shipping issues by the manufacturer, a reservation deposit does not guarantee receipt of a system available to purchase at launch. Reservations/Purchases are limited to 1 per household.
Due to extremely limited supply, we expect to deplete this allocation very quickly, most likely in minutes..... makes me wonder why they even bother with pre-orders if numbers are that tight.

you got me. I haven't a clue. Unless these people are gonna buy them for $600 or whatever and put them on ebay just to turn a profit. Kinda pissy that people do that.

I have no clue as to why someone would put another $100 on top the $600 price tag.

The $100 will end up being part of the $600 price tag, and is to ensure serious buyers only, I would imagine.

eBay is already alive with PS3 preorder sales, a few have been reportedly sold already according to digg.

Hype - emotion - to boost sales going forward. It's a herd mentality thing - everyone's in line, OMG, they're already out, I'll be in line as soon as I hear they have more in stock..."hurry, supplies are limited."

Hrm when the hell is this thing going to be released? And is this $100 deposit an actual deposit on the console or do you effectivly loose the $100 and still have to pay for a whole PS3 console(+$100).

I've been mistakenly watching trailers for the PS3 so now I am wanting one... but I don't see many games I like for it coming out for quite some time.

GameStop has announced their pre-orders have been sold out nationwide. Apparently in some stores the allocation was snapped up in 10 minutes.

I found this link to a list of games that might be available when PS3 and Wii launch.
