IE 6, SP2 re-install question

edited October 2006 in Science & Tech
IE 6 refuses to stay "associated" with .html files and has a couple of other problems also.

Microsoft's support site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378 says re-install SP2 in order to "repair" IE 6.

What they fail to say is whether or not to "un-install" SP2 before re-applying it.

Do any of you know if I should un-install my (apparently corrupted) SP2 before re-installing it?

any advice appreciated

I don't know if it's necessary to uninstall SP2 first, but I would do that if I were you. A re-installation is more likely to succeed if SP2 is not already resident. Before you uninstall and reinstall:

    1. back up any important data
    2. downoad SP2 and store in a folder before you uninstall SP2 from your system

That certainly makes sense to me, and is what I had planned to do. It just makes no sense that Microsoft says nothing about it in that link.
but, thx much for the input

If you are not sure that the problem stems from SP2 specifically, you could try a "repair" re-installation of Windows - not the Repair Console, but a "repair" Windows XP installation. Have you done that before?

No I haven't, since my original XP CD is XP with no service pack (yea it's old), I don't see how it could repair a problem with IE 6 that was part of SP1.
