AMD Announces Surprise Price Cuts

AMD has announced surprise price cuts that are valid through to year end.

These apply only to Socket 939 Opterons and AKA 1xx series, but the offer stands good on PIB and Tray parts. It seems that OEM's shifted to Socket AM2 a lot quicker than AMD had bargained on and have a surplus of these CPU's in their warehouses.

Prices are in US$

"Tray" refers to a bulk shipment.

Those Opteron 165 prices are very temping too for going dual core with your socket 939 board. Once you go dual core, you don't want to get a single core model again.

On another note, I saw that Newegg has the retail FX 55 Sandy on sale for $199.99 and that also includes a free Seagate 250 gig 7200.9 SATA 3.0 hard drive also. Now that is a hell of a deal if you want to go with a 90nm single core processor. Totally unlocked multi's and a free premium hard drive for $200. If I was shopping for an AMD processor that would be hard to turn down. :D

That is one sweet deal on that FX55 + drive combo. Single core, but what a deal :)

Yeah, I bet that even tempts you, LL. :D Too bad that Newegg doesn't ship to our northern neighbor. And I would help you out if you wanted but you would still have to deal with that damn Canuck import tax (or whatever they rape you on at the border).

I almost ordered the last OEM 165 from monarch but then I figured ...with my luck I'll get sucky stepping and be out $150 + shipping or whatever.
I'm going to spend the day air dusting this old booger off and remounting the waterblock. Last time I mounted I just used a dab right in the middle of the block. This time I think I'll spread a thin layer and see if there is a difference.

I did the remount and dust busting and it did well. At first temps were about 1c high but since then it cured overnight and temps are at or below normal now.

I wish the price cuts could save them from the failure that K8L is going to be.

So ...it mean smaller die like 65 &/or 45, quad core, more cache and am3 I assume. Sounds like both comapanies are overreaching to me. How much more can the conventional (termed loosely) silicone be developed?

I just saw a talk by one of the devices profs at University of Washington, and they're looking at doing some really cool things (replacing the gate oxide layer with something with a better dielectric constant, and placing stress on individual transistors to make doping more regular). I don't know if they're going to create that much of a benefit in the short term, but they are definitely promising.
