Cooling for my R9700

Well in the other thread (the one with the poll)
I have now stated that my fan on the R9700 has died.

What should I puchase to replace it?

Contestant no. 1
Zalman ZM-80A-HP

Contestant no. 2
Zalman ZM-80C-HP

Which one is the better choice?
What is the difference between the two quite similar solutions?

NEITHER. Get yourself a decent 60x60mm heatsink and slap it on. Since DogSoldier asked about the same thing, I told him I'd tell him how to do this w/o voiding the warranty. I'm finishing up testing the setup now, and I'll just post a new thread so everyone can see how to do it.

If you've got an old AMD retail HSF (the new Ajigo ones are great) use that. If not, any good HSF with a 60x60mm base should do. It cannot be any bigger than about 70mm, as I recall. I think 60mm is the realistic maximum. You can go smaller tho, in SOME instances. The main thing is that the heatsink has to have a solid base, because of the mounting system. So, unfortunately, thermalright's SLK/SK heatsinks won't work. But yeah, basically any normal hsf with a 60x60mm or 50x50mm base will work fine, from an attachment standpoint. I'm not sure how well a 50mm^2 HSF will cool it tho...

Anyhow, when I get home tonight, I'll try to post this "guide" (altho I also have a bunch of other stuff to do for other ppl here, as well as HW and some other stuff, so it may not get done until tomorrow or wednesday...)

BTW Can I use a chrome orb temporary?
I haven't got any cash left for a new cooler this month.
I suppose I will not be able to OC with the chrome orb.

I reckon that my solution with a dead cooler on the Radon and a 80mm blowing air on it is no good for anything but desktopping?

    1. With no active cooling, I wouldn't run the 9700 at all, preferably. If it's your only comp, don't do any 3d stuff.

    2. The Chrome orb is probably sufficient for a stock 9700. Beyond that, I don't know. Just remember to use a thick layer of thermal compound, because the shim on the 9700 is thicker than the core...

It is my only comp. Unfortunately.

I have put myself on a non 3d diet for now.

Remember I have a 80 mm fan blowing on the card.
    That should help a bit.

Hmm I could replace it with my old GF2 GTS
Guess I won't be playing Max Payne 2 for the time being.
    It doesn't matter much though.
I wouldn't be able to play it on the Radeon in it's present condition anyway.

Here is a picture of my Ghetto R9700 cooling.
I am sorry about the mess in my case.
I plan to clean up the cables soon. :p
I am installing my old GF2 GTS now BTW.
EDIT: The heatsink on the Radeon was lukewarm when I removed the card.
It doesn't heat up very much in 2d only.

Hmm. I dunno... maybe the 9700 would be fine. But IMO, it's not worth risking it...

    No my thought exactly.
    Therefore I made the switch.
I cannot play anything with the Radeon anyway.
    So what's the difference?

Oh, uh, btw... why do you have everything clustered around the graphics card (taht pci card and the usb ports)?

I always start filling the PCI slots from the bottom, to get as much room below the AGP slot as possible. More room = better cooling.

    Good question.
I really need to clean up in there.

I believe the sound card is there because that is where it was on my previous motherboard.

The connector to the usb ports is not very long.
But I think I could move it down a little.

I am also moving the two harddrives in the front.
They block the airflow and they can move around in the case when moved. Unless you take them out.

i read that with the zalman passive vga heatsinks, leaving the pci bracket on the case open can help to further cool your video card. something to think about when rearranging those devices.

Thanks for the advice astroworp I will try it out for sure.
It annoys me though that the Radeon hasn't got any way of monitoring the temperature.
My old GF2 GTS has that option.
I might have caught the dead fan earlier.
