Computer Restarts for No Reason

edited November 2006 in Hardware
I think I had a virus..... Last night my computer would suddenly restart for no reason..... I thought I'd update my anti-virus (McAffee) and scan my hard drive this morning and get rid of it.

I booted up XP as normal, opened up McAffee and clicked on the update links. As soon as it starts updating, PC reboots as yesterday. So it goes through the post screen and then says:

A hard drive read error
Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart.

Is there any way to fix my computer? On that hard disk I have lots of photos that I'd really like to keep, so I don't want to format it.

What to do its really annoying......

please help

Run the Quick and Full tests from the hard drive manufacturer. :)
