Signatures, new users, and post editing

I made a few changes to help combat spam on the forums. First, users with fewer than 5 posts cannot have a signature. I don't think this will impact anyone with enough curiosity to read this thread :)

Second, I've set a 24-hour time limit on editing posts. After that period of time, they are locked except to staff. This prevents link-adding after a thread is dead. I expect this may cause some inconvenience in the Trading Post and apologize in advance. vBulletin doesn't allow me to refine this setting by forum, unfortunately.

Third, I removed members with fewer than five posts from the Member List to prevent spam via setting a "home page" that displays in there.

Thanks to everyone who continues to report spam on the boards with the red flag icon  If you have any questions or requests regarding limits set on the forum, feel free to ask.

Additionally, I just installed a plugin that disables users with fewer than 5 posts from using links or images in their messages. :)

Can we institute the user group feature which will automatically give the ability to edit their posts indefinitely after 25 posts?

Unfortunately, this isn't tied to the normal tiered permissions (user groups, forums, and masks). It's a forum-wide option for which I have no greater control. Either it's a time limit, or none. :-/

Whew! I just wasn't sure if I've been here long enough or not.:tongue2:

I hope this helps, being the night shift at work I see a constant supply of spam on these and the other two boards I check on when I am bored. With my buds forums he finally decided that he'll manage the sign-ups manually.

I can see the sense in that. It should cut down a lot of spam.
However there are a few threads, especially the sticky's that encourage people to post their results such as overclocks, internet speeds, futuremark scores, pics of their rigs and the like. These are usually in the form of .jpeg's or links to online image storage sites. That could prove frustrating to newcomers.

Will this limitation at least be communicated to newcomers when they register?

Er, woops, yeah, that would be a good idea. :dunce: I'll add that to the welcome PM soon. (//edit: done)

However, I don't think 5 posts is an onerous requirement to fulfill before posting things like benchmark scores. I don't think we frequently see brand new members jumping in at that end of the pool. :)

Is it working? There's been a couple spam posts that still have links.

    No, it's not.

//edit: It should be fixed now.

great changes keebs. But, i dont like how we cant edit past posts... i know its cause spammers add garbage or whatever... but cant there be like some sort of limit? like.. people that have over like 300 posts can always edit their posts?

cause.. there are always thread revivals... and sometimes i want to go back and change what i said and i cant... its annoying... also.. i think this will cause chaos in the for sale/trade forum..

    *shrugs*

if it cant be helped then oh well...

I mean, if you have to go back and change what you said in a post after it was revived (Revived suggesting that it was written a long time ago), what exactly did you type?

I guess its just a convenience, i mean.. the name thread for example, i didnt know what my name meant before, i do now, i would have liked to go back and change it now that i know what it is, instead of having post again...

    i guess its just convenience

Hasn't been a significant problem here yet (that has been detected, anyway) but it is a growing problem around the 'net and spamming is up overall.

    Hello everyone,

I'm trying to add a signature and although I can see it on my user control panel, it will not come up in the main forum :)

Am I doing something wrong ?

Thanks in advance for your help

Whoa, I had to remove that movie and left a link instead. We have a 250kb size limit on signatures, so a 2.2mb movie is WAY too big. People on modems would be completely unable to open a thread in which you posted. Sorry :-/

    It's all right General :)

I didn't know what the rules are about limits with internet streams.

I'm glad you clarified it so I'll respect that :)

    Hi Rachael,

I'm glad you enjoy the sig :) The humour of Happy Tree Friends is plain insane :)

I've lived in the naaf (NW) but now I'm based in the saaf (SW) :) It's all London to me (yes that includes "little India" out in East Ham) :)

    Hi again Rachael,

Saaaf by the river is the place to be :)

I must congratulate you on breaking that 7500 mark :) I only caught a glimpse of it now through all that fog we've been having here lately :)

And one more thing regarding the FAH console trouble you experienced and the WUs you were working on. Maybe you restarted the console with the wrong windows user account. It happens to me as well and it will not find the WUs it was doing before I rebooted.
However, when I run the FAH console using the username and password of the windows account I was using before I had to interrupt it, the correct data is found and it continues from where it left off.

I'm "only" 8000 points behind you so we'll see how long it'll take for me to reach your mark :)

cheers :) onwards and upwards to 10K...

i think i've finally got the console issues sorted now, and EMIII set up to monitor progress- unfortunately i've got TWO of those bloody annoying WUs on the go (p2124_lambda_5way_melt_4_10011 type).

thanks for the suggestion about the windows account. i don't think that was the problem but it could be in future if i make that particular mistake, so i'll keep it in mind!

will keep an eye on your points total- btw where's your folding sig (and team badge)?!

    Hi again Rachael,

Great to see your console is running properly now :) It seems everyone on team 93 is handling that protein at the moment. It's the one my console is dealing with as well but it will complete the task very shortly and then hopefully find something that is less complicated :) Not that anything to with protein folding ever was simple :)

Anyway it's only the second WU for me and both have taken more than 4 days to complete, so folding at home isn't meant to be for someone who wishes to see "instant" results :)

My folding sig is under development and I'm still new around here so I haven't looked into how that team badge is acquired yet :) It will all come up soon though.

The bets were on for snow this Christmas but I guess we'll just have to settle with the fog :)
