Invalid system disk error

edited December 2006 in Hardware
I'm posting this here for a friend, here is his summary of the problem:

My computer was fine this morning but when I went to boot it up I got this error message: "Invalid system disk, Replace disk then press any key". I went BIOS tried rearranging the boot order. Nothing. Then I reset the BIOS to defaults, changed boot order to CD first and booted from the Windows Installation CD. I selected elected "repair" from the CD menu, selected 1 as the installation I wanted to log onto, entered my admin pass, and got this prompt: D:\WINDOWS> ...Now what do i do?

I'd start by running the Quick and Full tests from the hard drive manufacturer. There's no use in running around chasing a (potential) software problem until you know that the hardware is sound.

    Good luck. :)
