Anti-Spam Bill Passed in US Senate 97-0

edited October 2003 in Science & Tech
Depending on how many mailing list you are on, you many get anywhere from a few unsolicited emails to several hundreds a day. Well, the US Senate passed a bill to...
[blockquote]outlaw deceptive "spam" e-mail, and set up a "do-not-spam" registry for those who do not want to receive unsolicited commercial e-mail.[/blockquote]

Among some of the other provisions in the bill... No randomly generated emails, no hijacking of email address, and no emails to those people on the "do-not-spam" list.

At least it is illegal in the US (if you sign the bill) and Europe now.

Does this mean they can actually arrest them now?

it's not illegal in the US yet, it just passed the senate. now it's also got to pass through house of representatives, then the president can sign it into law or veto it. I doubt it will be a jail type offense (i know, it should be a death penalty offense) but i think they'll fine spammers. however, how much spam is coming out of asia and africa? that's why i don't think it'll make an ounce of difference until it's a worldwide crime. by then, we'll have neural email implants and be flying in starships too.

The registry would just give spammers in other countries a ready-made list of e-mail addresses to send spam to. US spammers need only move across the border to send spam again... bah! Mail-washer all the way!

that's a possibility for sure ghoos, however for me the more important issue is not so much that spam is annoying to deal with in your inbox, it's that it clogs up so much bandwidth on the internet, raising prices for you and me to get online. that to me is the real problem. these scumbags use someone else's bandwidth and make money, they're no better than thieves. yes i know i download music, games and movies, but i don't sell it and make a proit off o someone else's work.

    Yes.

It's a good move, but probably only a moral statement. I don't see how this will affect the spam mills in Brazil, Russia and other countries like that. We'll see many spammers merely moving offshore to countries.
