COOLMAX CT-470 or Vantec VAN-470A?

edited October 2003 in Hardware
Which PSU do you guys think would be better, or are they both the same. Im kind of inclined toward the vantec because its all black but i dont want to buy the VANTEC just because of that and then notice that the COOLMAX was a better choice. Any help would be appriciated, thanks.

    Welcome to Short-Media diminion! :)

It's more important what amount of amperage output the PSU can put out than what it looks like :)

Compare specs and see which one outputs more amperage on the 5V+, 3.3V+ & 12V+ rails. Make your decision from that :)

    Probably the Vantec.

Why not get a PS from a known-good manufacturer, tho? I tell people to stick to Antec, PC Power & Cooling, or Enermax, unless price is a major issue. If you can't afford to drop $50+ on a decent PS, check AMD's approved power supply vendor list. But, out of those two, I'd go with the Vantec. I really think you should just get an Antec, tho.

    Thanks SimGuy.
I very well know its specs that count more than its appearance but it appearance does influence me. I mean if there is product A (color red) and product B (color brown) that are the same I'm going to choose A even if it cost me $5-10 extra. I would do that just so whenever I open up my case to work on it I can see red instead of an ugly brown.

Im not saying that the 2 PSU are the same, but since I don’t know squat about selecting PSU they are basically all the same to me. Im looking at the numbers now but all I see is things like: 0.1A, 47.0A, "less than 1% of variance" and some symbol I don’t know( ± ). Im at a complete lost with these power ratings.:confused2

Ill go and make myself understand this in the future but I’m anxious of getting a new one already and don’t want to research this right now. I rather waste my time deciding on other parts that do make sense to me. Also, if there are other PSUs that you can recommend that are under $100, please tell me about them.

***edit: thanks Geeky1, Ill look into Antec or PC Power & Cooling. i havent before because like i say my knowlage in PSUs is very limited. As long that its under $100 ill consider it. thansk for the help.***

    thanks agian.

The best PS for <$100 is, IMO, the Antec True 480:

However, if appearance matters, there are these two Enermaxes, both of which should be fine:

There's also the Antec TrueBlue 480, which (if you don't know) has blue LED fans:

But seriously, a 433w Enermax or 480w Antec is going to serve you better than a 470w Coolmax or Vantec. A good deal of these no-name PSes (which I consider the Coolmax, if not the Vantec, to be) are drastically overrated. And, if you push them too far, they can die and take your entire system with them. You're better off with a slightly lower capacity brand-name PS than a generic one. I mean, I've got a 1.4GHz TBird CAD/CAM system at work that had a generic 300w PS in it. I swapped it out for a 250w Antec and the voltages were BETTER.
