Building my own PC
djshowdown
London
I have just been given a 15" tft by a friend who had it lying around and i thought this would be the perfect opportunity to build another PC for my little bro and the rest of the family (I'm usually on mine so this will get them off my case he he)
anyway i been looking around online for some guidelines and stuff but most of the guides i have found, whilst being pretty good and informative, seem to be based on old technologies and operating systems (lots of stuff on how to start up a win 98 system with a pentium III processor, yuck)
Can anybody link me to a more current walkthrough
to give you an idea of what im looking to do
pc will have a pentium 4 processor at a minimum, possibly a core 2 duo
2 hard drives, quite large capacity
decent graphics card, preferably pci-e as i would like the system to be as future proof as possible
a good sound card, probably one that supports 5.1 as it would be nice to add a surround system at some point
dvd r/rw
1-2 gb very fast ram
plus anything i forgot
not sure if this is the right section, if its not then would someone kindly move it

They have guides that are very helpful.
There is a budget one and a midrange. These get revised frequently so they do reflect current technology.
The thing that I like is that they discuss the different alternatives for componanats and give you some examples of options.
you connect this to this then this happens
then you do this
etc etc
i mean im not completely unknowledgable
i have taken opened up my puter to re-seat ram, change dvd drive and like clean it and stuff
i just need to know what order to do stuff in once i have all my parts and stuff
here are a couple

or you can go to http://www.tigerdirect.com/
and select a motherboard and scroll down till you see the installation guide popup they have (same for power supplies)

thanks for the link
i had that bookmarked before my format but forgot about it
no problem
since i'm planning on building my own rig in a few months i had a few of these bookmarked already
the hardest part for me is choosing what kind of case i want
i want a micro-tower one for easy transport but they are somewhat limited in space and capacity for me to commit too
if anyone knows of a micro-tower case like this
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1385010&CatId=1508
but with more than 4 exp slots please let me know
plus i wanna have space to mess around in there and not have to weave through the cables
Build a PC from parts to software.
The same guide we used when we built our first pc.

Oh! There's a guide here? How nice! I'm liking this site more and more all the time.
Joined Folding@Home. Piece o' cake to set up. Have it running on two of my systems now. Hope it helps!
