I can't get my son's XBox 360 connected to our wireless network. Following are networking devices and settings:

XBox 360 -> Hawking HGA 11 (802.11b wireless adapter) -> WRT54G, v2 wireless 802.11G/B router on DSL (upgraded to latest firmware).

Our XBox (non-360) worked perfectly with this hardware setup and wireless router settings. I have not changed any router settings after setting up the XBox 360.

Main router settings:

- Local IP Address: 192.168.1.1

- Router Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

- Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0

- Interface: LAN & Wireless

- Server Settings (DHCP)

- DHCP Server: Enabled

- Starting/Ending IP Addresses for computers on network (auto assign):
192.168.1.100/149

- Maximum DHCP users: 50

- WPA Encryption turned on; block anonymous internet requests (box checked)

- Router set to allow "mixed" devices, 'B' or 'G'

- Access/PCs: allow 24/7

- Port Range: entries of Application, Start, End, Protocol, and Enable are blank; IP Address -- 192.168.1.0 (works with all four PCs connected); Protocol -- Both (TCP & UDP

- Management Port: 8080

- UPnP: disabled

I have tried three different approaches with the 360 networking settings:
1) I manually entered an IP Address within the allowed range set in the router, 2) set 360 IP Address to 192.168.1.0 and 3) left everything at automatic. When running the 360's networking test, the adapter field shows "Wired", which I assume to mean that it's detected. Nothing after that appears to pass. The "IP Address" fails each time, automatic or manual settings. I don't know where to go from this point. Any help would be appreciated.

Microsoft help pages show that the XBox branded wireless adapter is the 11A standard, but this should be compatible with a 'G router, right? But anyway, we aren't using the Microsoft adapter, but the Hawking, which worked great with the old XBox.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Leo

Don't bother manually setting any of the stuff on the 360, make sure its all automatic. In the past when I had trouble connecting my xbox (original one, not 360), I would plug it into the router with an ethernet cable. After it gets an IP address and whatnot then I unplug the ethernet cable and enable the wireless (on the xbox itself). This has worked for me before, but I'm not sure about 360's. But like I said, keep everything on automatic.

Try switching your router to WEP (:(), many of these console adapters don't understand anything else. If it does not specify any other standard than .11A, it's probably not compatible with .11G.. But I'd imagine it's a G device, but they'd rather advertise the best capability.

No, the 360 understands WPA, as does the Wii... Plus, that device is a wireless bridge, not a wifi adapter- as far as the console is concerned, it's a wired device.

Leo, check the cable between the 360 and the hawking. Do you have a link light? Maybe the 360 needs a test: Take it physically over to a place where you can plug it into a router, or just run a really long patch cord to the router, and see if that works, just for giggles.

The same wireless adapter worked perfectly with the XBox (non-360) on WPA. The adapter itself is B standard. Sorry, I was not clear before - the Microsoft branded adapter ($$) is A standard.

Good suggestions so far. I'll double check for link light to the adapter. I'll also connect the XBox directly to the router via cable.

Not all 3rd party wireless adaptors work, I think Netgear gaming adaptor works but your best bit is stick to the official gear with the 360 as Microsoft have not allowed third party to develope Wi-fi based accessories for the 360.

Thanks. As it stands now, my son is happy enough with just standalone game mode and DVD playing. If and when he decides to pay for online gaming services, perhaps then a third party adapter will be available. Not all adapters worked with the first generation XBox either.

Just so you know if you havent made an Xbox Live account on the 360 then any achievemants you have unlocked will be all lost because they are linked to your gamertag.

You can make a gamertag if you can at least connect via ethernet and you get 1 month gold for free then you get a silver account which lets you talk to others and download some of the content from the marketplace Silver Live is free.
