computer not recognizing Ipod or ILO mp3 player

hello all,

my computer is not seeing either the Ipod (30 g) or the ILO mp3 player.
they both work fine on other computers.

I plug them in and I hear a clicking/boing sound. 2 or 3 rapid ones. but no screen comes up for them.

one of the ports I use will charge the Ipod but that's it.

I have downloaded Itunes 7.0
my device manager says my USB ports are working properly.
computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 2.4 ghz 256 ram
windows xp home edition

Ipod shows up in device manager under other "devices" with a yellow ? by "other devices" and a yellow ? with a ! by "Ipod"

anybody have any idea what's going on here?

    If you go into Windows Explorer, do the devices show up?

    they do not show up in windows explorer
