Installing Windows XP with WinImage

edited January 2007 in Science & Tech
Hi People!

I'm new to the crowd, but I need your help. The thing is: Our Windows is working. Sort of. Instead of opening up .exe-files it asks with which programm I want to open it with. And most of the time, choosing the right .exe file doesn't work. I can't add or remove any programs and it's all messed up.

So we bought a new Windows XP, only that it kind of went to pieces when my younger siblings were playing. My uncle said that it was cool, we could download it. So we did. I'm leaving for school the day after tomorrow and won't see my family until six months later, so I'm really trying to get this fixed before I go. Up until the download it all went well. I have the file and everything, now I'm trying to figure out how to mount the files and reinstall it, when I can't uninstall the previous version (rundll.exe isn't working aswell). We downloaded WinImage in hopes of sucess, but for some reason when I push the button for installing windows, nothing happens...at all!!! Although some of the buttons work.

Anyway, guys, I need your help trying to fix it. I can't even burn a freaking CD because the CD's we have are in a smaller format than what the total size is. Can someone help me!?

    Hi Jacy,
I'm not quite sure I understand your problem and exactly what you're trying to do or what you have done so far.

If you can't run executables, you're in trouble. Your system is likely infected w/ malware. You might want to try our malware forum.

Rundll.exe doesn't work because your system is in trouble w/ respect to running executables (files ending in .exe) in general.

When you say you "...bought a new Windows XP...", do you mean that you purchased a new operating system CD and license? If so, did you purchase the same version (e.g. Home vs Pro vs MCE)? ...or do you mean that you purchased a new computer whose operating system is Windows XP?

I don't know what you mean by "...My uncle said that it was cool, we could download it. So we did..." By "download" do you mean you installed something? ...the Operating System for instance? Or do you mean you downloaded a file from the Internet?

What did you intend to do w/ WinImage? What do you need that for?

Please, be very detailed when letting us know what you're experiencing (what your problem is) with your system and e-x-a-c-t-l-y what measures you have taken to address the issues. We're glad to help but we need to be clear about what is going on first. ;)

    Sorry, for being so vague.
We purchased a new Windows Xp to our computer, whose operative system is Windows XP currently. The CD although was smashed by my cousins. Instead of buying a new one, my uncle said that we should try and download it. So we downloaded it with the help of Morpheus.

The files can not be opened unless I have a virtual drive, that's were WinImage came into the picture.

We tried virus scanning, but it doesn't show us anything. We have a real version of Norton Antivirus 2007.

I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP or at least get rid of the virus.

I really hope that someone can help me..

If your uncle "downloaded" Windows, then it is certainly an illegal, pirated copy. At Short-Media, we do not endorse illegal software.

Now, with that said, I won't bump you off the forums, as I believe you've been handed a raw deal by a well-intentioned person. Let's work on your probable malware infestation. Please go to our Spyware & Virus Removal Forum and post a new thread. So we can better assist you, please read this thread first and follow the instructions.

I hope our volunteers can help you through your problem.

Concerning your Windows CD - if you saved the Windows CD code as printed in the CD materials or the code on the sticker on your computer, Microsoft might be able to replace the CD for a modest fee.
