deleting AyeShutDown software???

edited January 2007 in Science & Tech
Hello all --

In an attempt to keep track of my daughters' on-line time, I went in search of software that would give me a chance at success. I tried Ayesoftware's program, Ayeshutdown. At first it seemed like the perfect solution, but for some reason the PC I loaded it on did not agree. The clock became unable to keep proper time, thus making the ability to shut down the PC at specified times useless. I have since bought and installed AceSpy software which is working perfectly. But this leaves me with aproblem...

I cannot get rid of the AyeSoftware program. I searched the C; drive for anything close to having the letters AYESHUTDOWN in their titles, and deleted everything I found, which wasn't very much. There is no mention of this program in the REMOVE program section of the Control Panel. I also did a search of the Registry, without any luck. Whenever I reboot the PC, the tiny Ayeshutdown icon appears again on the far right of my taskbar, near the time display.

It's starting to drive me a little crazy, having to enter the password and turn it off everytime I want to use the computer. I will appreciate any help you can give me with getting rid of this software.

Thank you...

Scott

Try RegScrubXP, which is an excellent Windows XP Registry cleaner. If you've partially uninstalled the AyeSoftware program, there's a better than 50:50 chance RegScrubXP will find the remnants of the program that may still be lodged in the registry and remove them.

The program may show up in an HijackThis log. If you know HijackThis is, then post a log and I will take a look at it for you. If you don't know what it is, let us know.

    Hey Scott,
Unfortunately, some poorly designed apps are a real bear to remove. The utilities the others recommended will, hopefully, aid in extricating most of the critter from your file system and registry. However, there still may be remnants left behind. If the icon still appears in your "System Tray", please, try the following...

Disclaimer: Futz w/ your registry at your own peril! :hair: Having said that... b-e-f-o-r-e tinkering w/ your registry, export any key you intend to change a-n-d create at least one Restore Point... If you don't know how to do any of these things just let us know.

The icon is appearing in your "System Tray" (lower right hand corner of your desktop - to the right of the "Task Bar") because it is being "called" or "started" when your system boots in one of the following ways:

(More info. here re: understanding and managing Windows XP Startup http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startup.htm )

A Shortcut in One of your Startup Directories:
    "c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Startup" directory
    "c:\Documents and Settings\%user profile%\Start Menu\Startup" directory
If you find one or more of the app's or suspicious shortcuts in a Startup directory, move it out of the Startup directory (onto your desktop for instance). If it's determined later that the shortcut is definetly related to the app you're trying to remove, then you may delete the shortcut.
    ---
A Run Entry in one of your Registy Keys:
    "My Computer \ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run"
    "My Computer \ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ RunServices"
    "My Computer \ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run"
    "My Computer \ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ RunServices"

If you find one or more entries that are releated to the app you're attempting to remove, delete it. (*** backup the registry key 1st, before you change anything ***)
    ---
A service that is initiated when your system boots:
    Click START then RUN
Enter MSCONFIG in the field to the right of OPEN and press [ENTER]
    Select the SERVICES tab
At the bottom, check the HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES box
Click the Column Header STATUS to sort the services by their status (RUNNING or STOPPED)
Look for a RUNNING service that is related to the software you are attempting to excise. If you see one that appears to be associated w/ the software, remove the check from its check box.
Click OK and restart the computer.

If it's determined that there actually was a service running related to the stubborn app, let us know and we'll step you through how to disable the service entirely. (Disabling an item in MSCONFIG is just a temporary measure towards trouble shooting an issue. It (MSCONFIG) should be restored back to its NORMAL state after the issue has been resolved.)

    Hello all --

I cannot believe the quality of the answers you've given to me!!! Thank you VERY much for taking a stab at helping me through this problem. I will try these solutions tomorrow as my daughters' PC is downstairs, and I'm handicapped, currently working upstairs. I feel these solutions will be the answer I need.

As this is the first time I've used this web site, I am very impressed, and will be sure to tell my friends and relatives about how well it works.

You are most welcome. Take your time when following our recommendations. Don't be afraid to ask questions. As a rule of thumb, the more info. you can provide to us the better. You are our eyes and ears when it comes to diagnosing and helping you to repair your computer.

Absolutely! Do come back and by all means bring your friends. All are welcome here.

A litte side note: You might want to print out our recommendations before attempting to tackle working on your daughter's computer.

Get back to us w/ any questions, etc. And don't :eek2: attempt a step we are recommending (e.g. modifying your registry) unless you are comfortable w/ it.
